Volleyball Victorious Over Worcester State, 3-1, on the Road

WORCESTER, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth women's volleyball team were victorious against Worcester State University after earning a 3-1 road win (25-17, 19-25, 25-12, 25-12) on Tuesday night in non-conference action. The Corsairs are now 5-2 on the season with tonight's victory while the Lancers fall to a 2-3 overall record.
 
The Lancers took an early 3-2 lead to open the first set of the match before the Corsairs connected six straight points highlighted by a kill from first year Olivia Seutter and a service ace by sophomore Maria Torres. After Worcester State took a timeout late in the set, UMass Dartmouth would secure the first set as sophomore Allison Pate tallied the final two kills for the Corsairs to put the team up 1-0.
 
Worcester State jumped out to 5-0 lead to start the second set, but Seutter and senior captain Kate Wade quickly responded by notching two kills apiece to narrow the home team's lead to one point. The Lancers answered by going on another five-point run midway through the set to claim an 11-5 edge over the Corsairs. Seniors Monika Kristjansdottir and Chelsea Sanker posted a pair of blocks late in the set for UMass Dartmouth, but Worcester State took the second set, 25-19, to even the match at 1-1.
 
Sophomore Skye Peters kicked off the third set with two service aces during a 5-0 run for the Corsairs. UMass Dartmouth continued to dominate in the set generating an 8-2 run to take a 10-point advantage. Wade and Kristjansdottir sealed the third set win, 25-12, with their kills to regain a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.
 
Trailing 4-0 to start the fourth set, UMass Dartmouth kept battling as Wade registered two kills to make it 8-6. After being down 9-6 in the set, the Corsairs would go on to win 16 of the next 17 points to take a commanding 22-10 advantage. UMass Dartmouth sealed the win over Worcester State thanks to their mid-set push, winning the fourth set by a final score of 25-12.
 
Seutter lead the squad with a team-high 12 kills to go along with one dig in the match. Pate and Wade each recorded nine kills apiece while sophomore Maddie Carter tallied six kills in the win. Peters had 20 assists in the match as well as a team-high four service aces and six digs.
 
On the defensive side, Wade ended the night with a season-high 18 digs while Torres (13) and Pate (11) also registered double-digits in digs. Kristjansdottir made six total blocks featuring two solo blocks in the victory along with four kills, two assists, two aces, and seven digs.

The Corsairs open their 2024 home schedule this Saturday, Sept. 14 in tri-match action beginning with Lasell University at the Tripp Athletic Center. The first match of the day is set for a 10:00 am start time.
