Women's Soccer Comes Up Short Against Roger Williams, 2-1

Jaeger nets first collegiate goal for the Corsairs

DARTMOUTH, Mass. –  First year Lilly Jaeger netted her first collegiate goal for the UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team on Wednesday evening during a close 2-1 loss to Roger Williams University in non-conference action. The Corsairs are now 1-3-1 on the season while the Hawks improved to a 4-2-0 overall record.

Casey Donnelly of Roger Williams fired the first shot of the game that would go wide of the net and out of play. At the 17:21 mark, the Hawks found the back of the net after Sabrina Sherman stole the ball away from a Corsair defender in the penalty box and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to give the visitors the early 1-0 edge.

UMass Dartmouth quickly responded thanks to Jaeger who picked-the-pocket of a Hawks defender and ripped a deep shot that lofted over the goalkeeper to tie the game up at 1-1. After Jaeger's equalizer, Roger Williams answered by applying pressure to UMass Dartmouth's backline.
Sarah Baptista lasered the ball at Corsair goalkeeper Grace Conti at the 30th minute of the half. Conti made the initial save before Raffaella Brunetti tapped the loose rebound into the goal to regain a 2-1 lead for the Hawks.

Brunetti tested goalkeeper Tori Russo, who checked into the game for UMass Dartmouth, early in the second half but Russo was able to make the stop. After back-and-forth action midway through the final half, the Hawks almost capitalized in the 81st minute after Baptista registered a shot that went off the crossbar before the Corsairs defense cleared the ball out of danger.

The Hawks held a 16-7 advantage in total shot attempts along with a 10-3 edge in shots on-goal in the game. Roger Williams also earned three corner kicks in comparison to UMass Dartmouth with two corner kicks.

In addition to a team-high five shots in the contest, Jaeger notched her first collegiate goal as a Corsair. Seniors Kaitlyn Nguyen and sophomore Adriana Adames each produced one shot in the game as well for UMass Dartmouth.

Conti registered one save and allowed two goals after playing the first half of the game. Russo checked in for the second half posting six saves on the evening. Roger Williams goalkeeper Coco Marrelli recorded a pair of saves in the win and allowed one goal after playing the entire game for the Hawks.

UMass Dartmouth is back on the road this Saturday, Sept. 14 at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The non-conference game is set for a 2:00 pm kickoff from Clean Harbors Stadium.
