Field Hockey Falls in LEC Opener at Keene State

KEENE, N.H. - Powered by a four-goal fourth quarter effort, the Keene State field hockey team posted victory over UMass Dartmouth in the Little East Conference opener for both teams. The Owls remain undefeated on the season with the 9-0 win, while the Corsairs slip to 3-6 overall.

The Corsairs had a solid chance to open the game as rookie midfielder Kayla Crai fired in a shot on Keene goalie Clara Gorman, who made the stop at 5:11. Then, the homestanding Owls opened the game's scoring at 14:17 of the opening quarter on a tally from Grace Bazin. Keene State banked two more tallies in the second frame, behind the sixth of the season from Meghan Daileanes and the first of the year from Hannah Wood.

Third quarter action saw Irini Stefanakos net her third of the season, while Bazin connected at 39:06 to put the Owls up by a 5-0 score heading into the final frame. Bazin went on to score her 13th of the season, followed by three more tallies to close out the game's scoring.

UMass Dartmouth had a solid chance late in the frame, earning a penalty corner at 54:02. Sophomore defender Sophia Bouffard inserted the ball as Crai sent a shot in that was blocked in front.

Crai finished with two shots, including one on goal, while Bouffard recorded a defensive save for the Corsairs. In goal, rookie Shane Cueman shouldered the loss, recording five saves through 30 minutes of action. Senior captain Hannah Trombly came on in the third quarter, notching four saves over 17:31 of play, while junior Kelsie Couto played 12:29 to conclude the game and had two saves.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Simmons University to take on the Sharks at 5pm in Boston.
