Adames Braces Corsairs to 2-0 Win Over Rams

Sophomore's first collegiate tallies pace women's soccer past Framingham State

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by a two-goal night from sophomore defender Adriana Adames, the UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated Framingham State University by a 2-0 margin on Wednesday evening. The Corsairs improve to 3-3-2 overall, while the Rams are now 1-6 on the season.

The Corsairs, who had a number of solid chances through the opening 20 minutes of the first half, got on the board first as Adames stepped up for a free kick on the far side of the field. The captain lofted the ball high, which went over the head of Framingham State goalie Madison Magone, for her first collegiate tally.

UMass Dartmouth, which owned a 7-4 shot advantage in the first half of action, took a 1-0 lead into the second half but it was the visiting Rams that had the first chance to tie things up. Awarded a free kick in the box, rookie midfielder Abigail Pratt stepped up to take the shot, sending the ball too high and up over the net to preserve the Corsairs 1-0 lead.

That attempt started a flurry of action for Framingham State as rookie forward Hailey Ring sent a shot into the right side that was saved by UMassD goalie Emma Juelis, followed by a shot from senior midfielder Alicia Tocman that was blocked before a Megan McAuliffe shot missed just high in the 53rd minute.

UMass Dartmouth countered in the 59th minute as junior midfielder Ashlyn Aguiar fired in a shot to the low center, but Magone made the quick stop for the Rams. The 67th minute saw another solid opportunity for the visitors as junior forward Grayson Tellier sent a long arcing shot in on the free kick. It sailed in from deep, but Corsairs goalie Grace Conti was there to make the stop.

But it was in the 77th minute as Adames added to the Corsairs lead, firing in a bulleted shot from 30-yards out. Her shot sailed high, arcing down into the net above the reach of Magone for the 2-0 lead.

The Corsairs utilized strong defense down the stretch to seal the shutout victory, owning a 19-12 (15-5 on goal) lead in shots for the contest. Adames scored both goals, with her second assisted by rookie defender Molly Sheehan, as three goalies saw time for the squad. Rookie Tori Russo earned the win, recording one save in the opening 30 minutes of play before giving way to Juelis, who stopped one shot through 28 minutes. Conti came on for the remainder of the game, notching three saves on the evening.

Framingham State was anchored by an outstanding effort from their goaltender, Magone. Over 90 minutes of play, she recorded 13 saves.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Gorham, Maine to open Little East action at the University of Southern Maine. Kickoff is set for 1pm.
