Field Hockey Shoulders Tough Loss to Western Connecticut

Corsairs fall 2-1 in overtime to the Wolves

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth field hockey team shouldered a tough 2-1 overtime loss on Saturday, falling to Western Connecticut State University in Little East Conference action on Cressy Field. The Wolves move to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in LEC play, while the Corsairs are now 3-8 and 0-2 in conference action.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Corsairs got on the board as rookie forward Kenzie Bliven tipped home a shot off the stick of sophomore forward Sam King at 28:29. Both teams continued to have chances throughout, but UMass Dartmouth continued to hold the advantage until the fourth quarter as the Wolves battled back.

Carrying the ball into the circle, WestConn's Reagan Schoen was able to fire the ball past Corsairs keeper Hannah Trombly to tie it at 1-all at 53:14. The Corsairs had several chances following the goal, including a great shot by senior midfielder Jenna Carvalho, which Bomboy was able to make the quick stop.

Heading into overtime, the Wolves went on the attack and freshman Andrea Moulton capitalized, firing in a shot that was initially saved by Trombly. The ball came loose and from her knees, Moulton was able to backswing the ball into the open goal for the game-winner.

WestConn saw Schoen finish with eight shots, including four on goal, adding a goal, while Moulton had two shots on goal with the game-winner. Bomboy recorded seven saves for the victory.

The Corsairs saw Bliven record three shots, all on goal, with the lone tally. Sophomore defender Sophia Bouffard posted a defensive save, while Trombly had seven saves in the loss.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Thursday, traveling to Framingham State University for a 7pm contest.
