Corsairs fall 3-2 to Rams in non-conference tilt

Box Score FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Powered by a goal from senior forward Kaylee Beck in the 70th minute of play, the Framingham State field hockey team defeated UMass Dartmouth, 3-2 in overtime on Thursday evening. The Rams improve to 4-4 overall, while the Corsairs are now 3-9 on the season.

Locked in a 2-2 tie following a fourth-quarter equalizer goal from the visitors, Framingham State earned the victory as Beck navigated the ball in down the left side. Fighting with a defender into the middle near the top of the arc, Beck fired a shot that appeared to bounce off the stick of a defender in front, caroming into the Corsairs goal for the game-winner.

UMass Dartmouth carried momentum into the OT session, firing in a pair of shots on goal from forward Kenzie Bliven and midfielder Kayla Crai – both rookies – but Rams keeper Kaitlyn Tello held strong.

The homestanding Rams opened the game's scoring in the 22nd minute of the opening quarter as senior forward Emma Bailey sent a shot into the middle that rookie forward Mikayla Malmquist buried past Corsairs starting goalie Hannah Trombly.

UMass Dartmouth tied it up in the third as the Corsairs sent a shot in on goal that Tello made the stop on. As the ball came loose, Tello dived to cover the ball, which spurted loose to sophomore forward Brooke Lydon as she banked it into the open net.

The Rams answered less than three minutes later after an infraction deep in the zone gave Framingham State a penalty stroke. Graduate midfielder Angelina Serra stepped up to take it, shooting it past the reach of Corsairs goalie Shane Cueman in the 43rd minute.

Lydon played the equalizer hero once again in the fourth, burying a feed from rookie forward Arlene Johnson to knot the game up at 2-all, setting up the overtime drama.

Tello earned the victory in goal, recording five saves on the night. UMass Dartmouth, which owned a 12-11 advantage in shots on the night, saw Trombly play the opening 30 minutes of action, recording four saves. Cueman came on in relief for the third and fourth quarters – along with overtime – shouldering the loss with one save made.

The Corsairs return to action on Saturday, welcoming Little East-rival Eastern Connecticut State to Cressy Field for a 12pm tilt.
