Men's Soccer Tripped Up by Salve Regina, 4-0

NEWPORT, R.I. – The UMass Dartmouth men's soccer team fell to Salve Regina on the road  Wednesday night by a final score of 4-0. The Corsairs are now 0-2-1 overall on the season while the Seahawks improve to 2-1-0.

The Seahawks capitalized on an early attacking chance in the opening minute of the game thanks to Daniel Goba slotting the ball into the back of the net off a cross from Brandon to give the home team a 1-0 edge. Approaching the 15th minute, Salve Regina were awarded a penalty kick resulting in a goalkeeper change for UMass Dartmouth as sophomore Kellen Porter checked into the game. Jordan Borges stepped up to take the penalty kick and slotted the ball past Porter to take a 2-0 advantage.

Sophomore Mario Rodriguez fired the first shot attempt for the Corsairs however his shot went wide of the net and out of play. Shortly after Nate Cordeiro tested Salve Regina goalkeeper Adonis Santiago by rifling a shot on frame that Santiago was able to save.

Salve Regina quickly extended their lead to start the second half of the contest as Goba netted his second score of the day to make it 3-0. At the 69:23 mark, Tyler Ferris tallied the fourth goal of the night for the Seahawks to solidify their 4-0 victory. Fifth year Kyle Rhines had a goal scoring opportunity off a corner kick around the 70th minute but his header attempt would go high over the crossbar.

The Seahawks ended the game with a 14-5 advantage in total shots along with a 9-1 edge in shots on-goal. UMass Dartmouth and Salve Regina each recorded five corner kicks apiece in the contest.

Rodriguez concluded the night with a team-high two shot attempts for the Corsairs. Junior Ethan Donahue registered two saves and allowed one goal while Porter made three stops and allowed three goals.

The Corsairs return home to host Salem State University on Saturday, Sept. 7 for a non-conference tilt starting at 12:00 pm.
