Men's Soccer Posts 1-1 Draw With Lancers

Corsairs battle to a tie against Worcester State on Senior Day

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth tied things up late in the first half and held on for a 1-1 draw against Worcester State University in non-conference action on Saturday on Cressy Field. The Corsairs are now 7-7-3 on the season, while the Lancers move to 5-9-1 overall.
 
The game marked Senior Day for the Corsairs, who honored captain and goalie Ethan Donahue, defender Sam Gagner, defender Nick Mahjoory, defender Jed Theilman, midfielder and captain Andrew Pacheco, goalie Cole Travers and defender Peter Kerrigan in a pre-game ceremony.
 
First half action saw the Lancers open the scoring in the game as shot by sophomore midfielder Jacob Barcelos sailed into the lower left corner past the reach of UMD's Travers in the 33rd minute of play.
 
The Corsairs tied the contest just before the end of the half as a free kick attempt by junior midfielder Nate Cordeiro found its way into the lower left corner of the net past junior goalie Tobias Schneider with less than 20 seconds left in the opening half of action.
 
Second half action saw both teams with chances to break the stalemate, including a shot by Mahjoory as his shot went just high of the net less than four minutes into the frame. The Corsairs then saw junior midfielder and captain Mario Rodriguez send a shot in on goal that was saved to once again keep it locked at 1-all in the 53rd minute.
 
The Lancers bounced back as a shot by Brady Iovanni was saved in the lower right corner by Donahue, while an ensuing shot by Shawn Jakob Aquino seconds later in the 62nd minute missed just left.
 
UMass Dartmouth had another golden opportunity in the 66th minute, earning a penalty kick opportunity that was taken by sophomore Daniel Jordan. His shot was saved by Schneider to keep the tie in place.
 
The Corsairs defense continued to hold steady, blocking several shots several shots late in the game. Despite several solid attempts, neither squad could grab the equalizer as the game finished with the draw.
 
In goal for the Corsairs, Travers finished with two saves in the opening half, while Donahue posted one save over 45 minutes of action in net. Mahjoory recorded a team-high four shots, while Cordeiro had two shots and the lone goal for UMD.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to UMass Boston for their final game of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 12pm against the Beacons.
