DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore left fielder
Marcus Ollivierre's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the UMass Dartmouth baseball team to a 7-6 win over Wheaton College in the Corsairs home opener on Tuesday afternoon. The Corsairs move to 7-5 on the season with the victory, while the visiting Lyons are now 4-6 overall.
The victory over Wheaton marked the first for UMD since May 1, 2018 when the Corsairs defeated the Lyons 5-4 in Norton.
Trailing by a 6-5 scored headed into the bottom of the eighth inning, graduate student first baseman
Joe Muzio stepped up to the plate with a runner on. His hit to left was misplayed by the Wheaton outfielder, allowing the UMD runner to score to tie the game, 6-6.
Junior hurler
Geordan Jackson Murphy came on in the top of the ninth, retiring the side to set up the drama in the bottom of the frame. With two outs on the board for the Corsairs, sophomore shortstop
Cooper Wixon belted a double into right center.
Ollivierre stepped up to the plate, sending a long single into right field at Wixon turned on the burners toward home. Wheaton right fielder Shawn Cali fired the ball in to get the out, but Wixon beat the throw across the plate for the game-winning run.
Wheaton opened the game's scoring and owned a 3-0 advantage until the second as an RBI single from senior right fielder
Scott Cromack drove in a run. The Lyons answered in the fourth, taking a 6-1 lead, but in the bottom of the fifth, graduate student catcher
Matt Tempone homered over the right center wall for a three-run shot, followed by a home run to center off the bat of senior third baseman
Jake San Antonio to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Ollivierre went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Tempone was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. San Antonio had a hit, two runs scored, and a run batted in, while junior centerfielder
Brett Baker was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. On the hill, Jackson Murphy picked up the win – his first of 2025 – allowing just one hit in the final inning.
