Softball Falls in Conference Series Against Western Connecticut State University

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth softball team fell against Western Connecticut State University in Little East Conference (LEC) double header action on Wednesday evening. The Corsairs narrowly loss in game one, 1-0, before suffering a 5-1 defeat in the second game of the series, dropping to 1-7 in conference play while the Wolves improved to a 5-3 Little East mark.
 
The Wolves grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a run batted in by Kendall Allen. UMass Dartmouth struggled to get their offense going in the opening five innings and produced one hit per inning. Senior outfielder Kinu Takasugi posted two hits highlighted by a double to left center field in the bottom of the five. The Corsairs were unable to answer after leaving eight runners on base falling by a final score of 1-0.
 
Takasugi led the team after going 2-for-4 at the plate featuring the lone double for UMass Dartmouth. Junior third baseman Raelynn Perregaux and sophomore first baseman Lily Routhier each posted one hit apiece after two at-bats while junior catcher Lena Tsonis went 1-for-3 at the plate. On the mound, first year pitcher Edy Crawford picked up the loss after throwing all seven innings for the Corsairs. She gave up just one earned run and three hits after throwing 52 pitches.
 
In game two, Western Connecticut State took a 1-0 edge after Jaycee Filancia notched an RBI single in the top of the third. After the Wolves doubled their lead in the fourth, junior outfielder Syndey Menz put the Corsairs on the scoreboard with an RBI single to score Perregaux home and make it 2-1. The Wolves continued to tack on three more runs in the final three innings of the contest to cement their series sweep by a final score of 5-1.
 
Takasugi once again posted a team-high two hits on four at-bats for the Corsairs along with a pair of stolen bases. Perregaux went 1-for-3 with a double and one run while Menz tallied the only RBI after going 1-for-3 at the plate. Routhier recorded her first career triple in game two after going 1-for-3. Senior infielder Larissa Piessens secured two walks and posted one stolen base in the contest.
 
Crawford earned the loss to move to 5-8 in the circle after pitching the opening three innings. She allowed two earned runs and six hits on 50 pitches thrown. Routhier checked in for the last four innings giving up three earned runs and three hits while also striking out two batters.
 
UMass Dartmouth will travel to Eastern Connecticut State University for their next conference series on Saturday, April 19. The first pitch of the day is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Clyde Washburne Field.
