Sophomore takes home second major year-end honor of career

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Little East Conference has announced its major year-end award winners in men's indoor track & field and UMass Dartmouth student-athlete Ancil Alexander has been named the Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. It marks the second year-end honor for the sophomore, who was the 2025 Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year as a rookie last season.

Alexander, who hails from Taunton, Mass., captured his year-end honor following a solid effort at the Little East Conference Championships this past Saturday. The sophomore finished second overall in the shot put with a throw of 15.64 meters (51' 3.75") – which was also a New England DIII Automatic qualifying mark. He garnered All-LEC Second Team recognition.

It has been an incredible season for the three-time LEC Field Athlete of the Week, who has captured three victories in 2026 for the shot put. Additionally, Alexander has posted ninth or better in nine of 12 events competed.

This year, Alexander has had a number of outstanding performances. He opened the season with third overall in the shot put at the Wesleyan Winter Invitational. Alexander went on to win the event at the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational before taking second overall in the shot put at the Gordon Kelly Invite on January 24.

Alexander went on to break the school record in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 17.34 meters (56' 10.75") at the multi-divisional John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University. He followed that effort up the next week at the Wheaton Invite, capturing the title with another school record throw of 17.49 meters (57' 4.75"), also finishing fifth in the weight throw (13.56 meters).

The sophomore – who currently ranked sixth overall in NCAA Division III in the shot put – placed third overall at the multi-divisional Hemery Valentine Invitational with a throw of 16.82 meters (55' 2.25") before taking second overall at the Little East Championships. He has produced New England DIII Automatic qualifying marks in every meet he has thrown the shot put in.

Alexander – who is a 2025 NCAA Division III Outdoor All-American in the discus throw – heads into the 2026 Division III New England Championships this weekend ranked first overall in the East Region and the Little East in the shot put. He captured the outdoor shot put and discus titles at the 2025 Division III New England Championships – becoming the first Corsair athlete to win the discus title in program history.

Action at this year's DIII New England Championship – which will be hosted at the TRACK at New Balance - begins on Sunday at 9:30am with a number of qualified men and women from the Corsairs squads heading North to Boston.
