PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Little East Conference has announced its weekly honorees in men's indoor track & field and two UMass Dartmouth student-athletes have been recognized. Junior
Cameron Thompson garnered Track Athlete of the Week, while sophomore
Ancil Alexander was the Field Athlete of the Week selection. It marks the second honor of the season for Thompson and the second straight week for Alexander.
Thompson, a captain out of Sherborn, Mass., helped the Corsairs to a team victory at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday. He claimed victory in the 1,000-meters with a personal record time of 2:29.98. It was not only a personal best, but marked his first New England Division III Automatic Qualifying time. Thompson also competed in the 4x400 meter relay, helping his team to sixth overall with a time of 3:37.46. Currently, he ranks fifth in NED3 and first in the LEC in the 1,000-meters after producing the fifth fastest 1,000-meter performance in UMD history on Saturday.
A weekly honoree two weeks ago, Thompson has competed in three meets for the Corsairs during the indoor season, notching three personal record times in three different events. In his season opener at the Gordon Kelly Invite, he ran to fifth overall in the 3,000-meters with a personal best time of 8:41.67. Then, at the John Thomas Terrier Classic at BU, he posted a personal record time of 4:16.31 in the Mile.
Alexander, who hails from Taunton, Mass., won the shot put at the Wheaton Invite with a throw of 17.49 meters (57' 4.75"). It marked his second straight win and also the the second consecutive week of breaking the school record in the event. He also finished fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 13.56 meters (44' 6") to finish as the highest individual scorer for UMD at the meet. On the season, Alexander ranks fifth in NCAA Division III in the shot put and is first in the event in NED3, the East Region and the Little East.
It has been an outstanding season thus far for the sophomore, who has competed in all five meets of the indoor season. He opened the season with a third place finish in the shot put at the Wesleyan Winter Invite before claiming victory the next week at Brandeis's Reggie Poyau Memorial Invite with a throw of 15.92 meters. After earning second overall in the shot put at the Gordon Kelly Invite, Alexander won the event at the multi-divisional Terrier Classic, eclipsing the school record twice with a winning throw of 17.34 meters. His latest throw of 17.49 meters is now a full meter over the old record of 16.48m - set by Andrew Swallow in 2022.
UMass Dartmouth will see select members in action on Friday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University, while the team is back on Saturday in Medford at the Tufts Cupid Challenge.
