Softball Splits Monday Action in Florida

Corsairs defeat Alverno, 16-0 in 5 innings; Fall 4-3 to Wisconsin-Platteville in game one

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The UMass Dartmouth softball team split action on Monday in The Spring Games action, posting a 16-0 win in five innings over Alverno, while shouldering a tough 4-3 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The Corsairs move to 5-1 on the season with the split.

In the game one opener, Platteville got on the board in the top of the second as Rylee Broshous sent an RBI double into centerfield. The Pioneers added another run soon after as Kaia McVay singled to right to bring in another run for the 2-0 advantage.

UMass Dartmouth countered in the bottom of the second as senior second baseman Emma Talpey grounded out to third base with a sacrifice bunt, but saw senior center fielder Sydney Menz come home.

In the bottom of the third, sophomore left fielder Lily Routhier belted a single into right field and advanced to second on the throw as two runners came in to put the Corsairs up by a 3-2 margin.

The fourth inning saw Broshous send a bomb over the left field wall to tie the game at 3-all and in the top of the sixth, Allison Peters singled to right field to bring in the game-winning run. UMass Dartmouth worked to come back in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third, but the Pioneers forced the final out on a line out to left to end the game.

Menz was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Routhier was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Junior catcher Olivia Silva was 2-for-4 with a run scored. In the circle, rookie Brielle Kenney went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with a strikeout. Sophomore Edy Crawford shouldered the loss, allowing one run on five hits over 3.0 innings of work. She also had two strikeouts.

In game two, the Corsairs came out firing, opening up a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. With runners on first and second, senior catcher Lena Tsonis singled to center to drive home the first run of the game. After a hit by pitch to senior center fielder Sydney Menz, second baseman Emma Talpey banked a single through the right side to drive home two runners and open the three-run lead.

Junior designated player Olivia Silva belted an RBI single to center field, which was followed soon after by a two-run single – once again to center – off the bat of Tsonis to open a 6-0 lead.

Sophomore Lily Routhier drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring another run across and a two-run single down the right field line from sophomore first baseman Nina O'Neil opened a 9-0 margin. Tsonis added another RBI, grounding out to second as Routhier came around to score from third.

After a quiet fourth inning, the Corsairs bats came alive once more. With bases loaded once again, Talpey reached first on an error to bring home a run. Rookie Brielle Kenney then singles to right, driving home another run and senior third baseman RaeLynn Perregaux singled through the right side to make it a 14-0 advantage. Silva walked to load the bases again and a sacrifice fly to center from rookie Aubry Mabrouk pushed the score to 16-0.

The Corsairs wrapped up the victory, their fifth of the season, in the fifth inning closing out the game before weather set in. Routhier went 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs, while Mabrouk pitched the final 2. Innings with just a walk surrendered.
