WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The UMass Dartmouth baseball team shouldered a tough loss to Rutgers University-Camden on Wednesday in RussMatt Tournament action at Chain O'Lakes Park. The Corsairs move to 6-10 on the season with the loss.
Rutgers-Camden opened the scoring in the first inning as a sacrifice fly with two on brought in the runner from third. A double down the right field line followed to give the visitors the 2-0 advantage.
The Scarlet Raptors added three more runs in the top of the second, but the Corsairs answered in the bottom of the frame a single to center from rookie second baseman
Jayden Cruz drove in a run.
In the top of the third, the visitors took advantage with a three-run double to build up an 8-1 lead, but Cruz sent a sacrifice fly to center to bring in another run to close the gap to six (8-2) in the bottom of the fourth.
Rutgers-Camden added four runs in the top of the fifth and three more in the top of the sixth, utilizing solid pitching to keep the Corsairs off the board and secure the seven inning win.
Cruz went 1-for-2 with two runs batted in, while graduate student first baseman
Spencer Aubin was 1-for-2. Junior
Nick Bartalini had a hit and a run scored, while junior pitcher
Dillon Harding shouldered the loss over 2.0 innings pitched. He surrendered four hits and struck out one batter. Senior
Aidan O'Donnell pitched 1.0 innings with a strikeout, while classmate
Ryan Jackson pitched 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. Sophomore
Jackson Huntington closed out the game over 2.2 innings with a strikeout.
UMass Dartmouth will play their final game of the RussMatt Tournament tomorrow at 9:30am, taking on Kalamazoo College at Chain O'Lakes Park.
