Softball Splits LEC Doubleheader Against UMass Boston

Corsairs improve to 17-7 and 5-3 in conference play

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth softball team posted a doubleheader split against UMass Boston on Tuesday in Little East Conference action. The Corsairs took game one, 4-2 and the Beacons posted a 6-4 victory in game two. UMD moves to 17-7 on the season with a 5-3 conference mark.
 
In the opening game, the visiting Beacons got on the board in the top of the first as a stolen base by Sofie Richland, turned into a run on an error on the throw to get her out at third. The Corsairs countered in the bottom of the frame as a grounder by rookie first baseman Bre Fontes drove in junior outfielder Olivia Ali to tie the game.
 
UMass Dartmouth went ahead in the bottom of the third, as a single by Ali through the right side made it a 2-1 game. In the top of the fourth, UMD's Hayley Krockta singled down the left field line to tie things at 2-2, but a single to center by senior second baseman Emma Talpey made it a 3-2 game.
 
Later in the inning, sophomore designated player Nina O'Neil grounded out to short, but senior catcher Lena Tsonis came in to score for the 4-2 advantage. Corsairs pitcher Brielle Kenney held tough through the final three innings, allowing three hits in that time for her sixth victory of the season.
 
Kenney allowed just two runs (1 earned) on eight hits with a strikeout over 7.0 innings. Ali was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, while Talpey was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
 
Game two once again saw the Beacons strike first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as a double by Liv Wentworth drove in a run, followed by a single up the middle from Lauren Miner.
 
In the bottom of the third, senior third baseman RaeLynn Perregaux doubled to left field, knocking in two runs to tie the game at 2-2. Senior outfielder Olivia Silva followed with a single to center, driving in Perregaux for a 3-2 advantage.
 
A two-run homer from Miner in the top of the fifth, coupled with another run on a score at home from Mary Matthews, saw the visitors take a 5-3 lead. Matthews made it a 6-3 game in the top of the seventh with an RBI double to right center field.
 
Perregaux homered in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to narrow the gap, but Beacons pitcher Lauryn Meade held strong, getting a final fly out to conclude the game with the 6-4 score.
 
At the plate, Perregaux went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, while Silva was 1-for-4 with an RBI. In the circle, sophomore Edy Crawford allowed five runs (4 earned) on eight hits with a strikeout over 5.0 innings pitched. Kenney came on for the final 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hits with a strikeout.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Thursday, traveling to Johnson & Wales University for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3pm.
