Women's Track & Field Posts 6th at Coast Guard Spring Invite

Solid efforts pace the way for UMD on Saturday

NEW LONDON, Conn. – It was a solid day of action for the UMass Dartmouth women's outdoor track & field team as they finished sixth overall at the Coast Guard Spring Invitational on Saturday. The Corsairs compiled 61 points on the day in a field of 11 teams.
 
In the track events, rookie Kiki Melick ran to 13th overall in the 100-meter dash with a mark of 13.03. Classmate Kiariana Williams was close behind in 15th with a mark of 13.09. In the 100-meter hurdles, rookie Adama Bangura posted eighth overall with a mark of 17.02. Fellow first year Jai'Reona Brown-Carter took 13th overall in 19.91.
 
The 200-meter dash was paced by Williams, who placed 26th overall in 28.63, while senior Isabella Taccogna was 29th overall in 28.90. In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Grace Russell powered her way to 11th overall in 1:12.01 as rookie Nicole Mota was 19th in 1:20.87.
 
Sophomore Ashlyn Byrnes led the way in the 800-meter run, posting 10th overall in 2:26.41, while classmate Sara Lopez was 18th in 2:29.82. The 1500-meter run was paced by junior Sarah Lynch, who recorded a time of 5:06.51 for 12th overall, while classmate Sophie Owen was 16th in 5:09.93. Junior Liv DeSimone was 28th (5:24.09), while classmate Serena Carnes was 29th (5:24.59).
 
In the 3000-meter Steeplechase, sophomore Natalya LaVita was second overall with a time of 12:46.16, while rookie Elena Aponte was fourth overall with a time of 13:08.82. Graduate student Emily Philbrook posted 13th overall in the 5000-meters, notching a time of 19:00.02.
 
Track events concluded with the 4x400-meter relay as Russell, senior Tori Schweitzer, Byrnes and Lopez combined to record a time of 4:21.88 for eighth overall. Owen, Carnes, DeSimone and LaVita finished 13th overall in 4:43.26 as rookies Alexah Pedder, Isabelle Chekares, Mota and sophomore Lylah Thibeault posted 14th in 4:52.64.
 
The field events saw the Corsairs earn a victory in the discus throw as sophomore Olivia Seutter posted a New England Division 3 Provisional qualifying mark of 35.25 meters (115' 7") to capture the win. Rookie Addy Keller posted 12th overall with a throw of 25.80 meters (84' 7").
 
Junior Emily Hesketh placed third overall in the hammer throw, notching a New England D3 Provisional qualifying distance of 43.30 meters (142' 0"), while sophomore Abby O'Leary was 12th overall with a mark of 34.81 meters (114' 2"). Keller went on to place 20th (30.89m; 101' 4"), while Seutter took 22nd (29.50m; 96' 9").
 
The high jump saw Taccogna finish in a tie for sixth overall, posting a height of 1.46 meters (4' 9.5"), while rookie Eshaya Lauder posted 12th with a jump of 1.36 meters (4' 5.5"). In the javelin throw, rookie Elizabeth Fagundes recorded fourth overall with a mark of 29.60 meters (97' 1"), while Russell was sixth with a throw of 27.52 meters (90' 3").
 
Lauder went on to place fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.17 meters (16' 11.5"), while in the pole vault, rookie Grace Hawranik posted sixth with a jump of 2.50 meters (8' 2.5").
 
Rookie Kearston Nelson placed second overall in the shot put with a New England D3 Provisional Qualifying throw of 11.12 meters (36' 5.75"). Seutter placed fourth overall, also notching an NED3 Provisional Qualifying throw of 11.03 meters (36' 2.25"). Keller placed ninth with a mark of 9.71 meters (31' 10.25"), while O'Leary was 14th with a throw of 8.81 meters (28' 11").
 
The UMD women's squad returns to action on April 10 and 11, traveling to Medford, Mass., for the Tufts Spring Stampede. Action gets underway on Friday at 1pm and continues on Saturday at 10am.
