CAMBRIDGE, MA-Anna Teriya scored the winning goal with 7:41 remaining to propel MIT to a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team in the 2009 season opener for the Corsairs.
The Engineers got a penalty corner with 8:05 remaining. Kameron Klauber passed in front to Teriya, who scored the game-winner.
UMD took a 1-0 lead when junior forward Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/Quinnipiac) converted a pass from junior defender Becca Festinger (Greenfield, MA/Greenfield HS) and scored three and a half minutes into the game. MIT equalized when Kimberly Barker scored unassisted at 25:41.
"We did some things well in the first half, but, overall, we still have some work to do," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "Although it was a tough loss, we are looking at the positive. We have a roster full of individual talent, now it's a matter of getting our chemistry together. Once that happens, we should click."
MIT out shot UMD, 10-8. Senior goalkeeper Seana Golden (Somerset, MA/Bishop Stang HS) made four saves for the Corsairs, while Keri Dixon made two for the Engineers.
UMD dropped to 0-1 with the defeat, while MIT improved to 3-0 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Clark Tuesday evening.
