Final Stats

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Freshman attacker Adam Niden (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) and junior attacker Nick Brett (Loudon, NH/Merrimack Valley HS/AIC) each scored four goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's lacrosse team to a 13-10 victory over visiting Plymouth State in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Saturday.

Brett's third goal of the day broke a 10-10 tie and gave UMass Dartmouth the lead for good with 6:55 remaining, Brett scored again with 5:34 left, and Niden scored his fourth and final goal with 2:30 to play to cap the scoring.

Brett and junior midfielder Christian Roberto (Wakefield, MA/Malden Catholic HS) scored the first two goals of the game to put the Corsairs ahead early. Freshman attacker Zach Frank (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) and sophomore midfielder Ty Long (Dover, NH/Dover HS) scored for PSU, and freshman attacker Chris Annunciata (Waltham, MA/Waltham HS) scored twice to tie the game at 4-4 34 seconds into the second quarter. Freshman midfielder Justin Lawless (Quincy, MA/Archbishop Williams HS) scored with 10:11 left in the second quarter to put UMD ahead at halftime, 5-4.

A goal by senior midfielder Stephen Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) with 31 seconds left in the third quarter put the Corsairs up, 9-8. Long scored twice and Niden scored once to tie the game at 10-10 with 9:45 to play, setting the stage for the Corsairs' late rally.

Brett added a pair of assists for UMD. Annunciata scored three times for the Panthers, sophomore midfielder Stephen Patch (Newbury, NH/Kearsarge HS) had four assists, and Long added two. Freshman midfielder Jordan McPherson won 15 of 20 face offs for the Corsairs in the final three quarters, including 11 in a row.

"It was a good win against a quality team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We played pretty well throughout the game. PSU is a scrappy tam, every time we had a one or two goal surge, they came back. We played well defensively, and Adam Niden, Nick Brett and (senior attacker) Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) all did a good job. I'm excited about the season and, hopefully, the post-season."

The Corsairs outshot the Panthers, 37-25. Freshman goalkeeper Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) made five saves for UMD, while senior goalkeeper Kevin Hayes (Beverly, MA/Beverly HS) made nine stops for PSU.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 9-1 and 1-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Plymouth State dropped to 5-4 and 1-1 in LEC play with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Roger Williams Thursday. The Panthers will host Salem State next Saturday.
