Men's Lacrosse Suffers 8-7 Setback In Second Overtime At MIT

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --  Sophomore James Santoro's (Tewksbury, N.J.) goal with nine seconds remaining in the second overtime lifted MIT to an 8-7 non-league college men's lacrosse victory over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium.

The host Engineers (2-1) saw the visiting Corsairs (0-3) jump out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 21 minutes of action, as UMass Dartmouth received first quarter scores from senior Mike Rizzo (Bridgewater, Mass.) and junior Jeff Wenzel (Medway, Mass.) before doubling that margin on second quarter tallies off the sticks of senior Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) and freshman Stephen Kolodko (Woburn, Mass.).  Santoro got MIT on the board with 4:15 remaining in the half to cut the deficit to three at the break, and the hosts engineered a four goal outburst in the third stanza to take a 5-4 advantage on junior Gavin Vandenberg's (Elmhurst, Ill.) with 3:16 to play in the quarter.

Sophomore Liam Miller (Pasadena, Calif.) capped MIT's six-goal run early in the fourth frame, but the Corsairs responded with goals from Wenzel and sophomore Zak Wirsen (Bourne, Mass.) to even matters before sophomore Kevin Swenson's (Ipswich, Mass.) man-up marker with 3:11 to play in regulation gave the visitors a 7-6 edge.  Junior Oliver Heins (Fair Haven, N.J.) provided the equalizer less than a minute later for the Engineers on a feed from Santoro, who netted the golden goal late in the second extra session after both teams had chances to win in the first overtime period.

Santoro added an assist to his two tallies to finish with three points in the triumph for MIT, which received two goals each from Vandenberg and Heins.  Koldodko collected a pair of helpers to go with his marker for a three-point performance in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which also received two points from Rizzo.

Sophomore Lukas Drexler-Bruce (Denver, Colo.) picked up the win in goal with a 16-save performance for the Engineers, while senior Ted McCaffery (Pepperell, Mass.) made 17 stops in the setback for the Corsairs.  MIT outshot UMass Dartmouth by a 40-32 margin overall and held a 16-4 advantage in the face off circle for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth hosts Wheaton in a non-league outing on Saturday at Cressy Field beginning at Noon, while MIT travels to Biddeford, Maine on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference clash with the University of New England that begins at 1:00 pm.
