Baseball Bows to Springfield, 12-5

Box Score

AUBURNDALE, FL-Springfield scored five runs in the second inning, took a 6-1 lead and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 12-5, at the Russ Matt Tournament at Lake Myrtle Field #2 Wednesday.

Sophomore third baseman George Aggostini (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/Marist) staked UMass Dartmouth to a 1-0 first inning lead with a solo home run, the first of his three hits. Senior catcher Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) drove in three runs for the Corsairs, freshman right fielder Connor Shaw (Goffstown, PA/Goffstown HS) had three hits, and sophomore left fielder Luke Bomback (Swansea, MA/Case HS) added two for UMD, which trailed in the fourth inning, 11-2.

"We're just not getting the starting pitching," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "We have a lot of young guys going out there for the first time, and it's a learning process. It's tough when you're playing from behind. You turn into a station to station baseball team, and that's not conducive to winning."

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 1-5 with the defeat, while Springfield improved to 3-2 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they play a doubleheader against Fredonia State Thursday. Springfield will play Ramapo Thursday.
