Corsairs Ride Hot Bats to Victory, 16-10

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Six University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball players recorded at least two hits to boost the Corsairs to a, 16-10, win over Trinity College (Conn.) on Sunday at the Chain of Lakes Stadium.

UMass Dartmouth closed out its spring trip by winning the final two games, improving to 4-7, while the Bantams slipped to 4-8 on the season.

Junior Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) and senior Wayne Bolz (Billerica, Mass.) paced the Corsair offensive attack. Medeiros went 3-for-4 with a homerun, two runs batted in, four runs and a stolen base, while Bolz compiled three hits, including a double and a triple, knocked home three runs and crossed the plate twice.

Sophomore Connor Shaw (Goffstown, N.H.) logged two base hits, two based on balls and three runs for UMass Dartmouth. Junior George Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with three RBI's and a run, while junior Ben Monteiro (Swansea, Mass.) recorded a pair of singles, two runs and one run batted in. Sophomore Joe Zottoli (Holden, Mass.) added two base knocks and two runs batted in, respectively.

The Bantams held a 2-1 lead until UMass Dartmouth fired off five runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a three-run double by Bolz. After Trinity added a run in the bottom of the third, the Corsairs piled on two more runs in the following inning to push their advantage to 8-3.

The Corsairs increased their lead (11-3) on a Matt Russell (Townsend, Mass.) sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Medeiros in the top of the seventh. Trinity answered back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning, but UMass Dartmouth outscored the Bantams by a total of 5-2 in the final two innings of play to secure the win.   

On the mound for the Corsairs, sophomore Steve Colella (Leominster, Mass.) allowed six hits and surrendered three runs in six innings to seize his first win of the season.

UMass Dartmouth returns to the diamond for its home opener on Thursday, March 27, when the Corsairs face Framingham State in a non-conference contest at 3:30 p.m.
