Corsairs Demote Cadets, 3-0

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Junior Jasmine Burris (New Bedford, Mass. / Greater New Bedford) registered a double-double, on 10 kills and 12 digs, to lead University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a 3-1 victory over visiting Norwich University this morning in the third game of the seventh annual UMass Dartmouth Volleyball Invitational.

The Corsairs evened their record at 2-2, defeating the Cadets 25-20, 25-14, 22-25, and 27-25.

Burris accounted for 10 of the hosts' 39 kills, while junior Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, Mass. / Dennis-Yarmouth) recorded seven kills, six service aces, two assists, and 12 digs.  Sophomore Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) handed out 19 assists, while junior Brianna Perry (Acushnet, Mass. / New Bedford) posted a game-high 33 digs.

UMass Dartmouth utilized a five-point run midway through the opening set to put some distance between the visitors, taking a 21-15 lead.  After trading points, the Corsairs were able to take advantage of a pair of attacking errors to close out the game.

The hosts' strung together eight straight points to seize control of the second set, racing out to 12-4 advantage.  UMass Dartmouth never let its lead dip below seven points the rest of the way, posting the comfortable 25-14 win.

After Norwich won the third set, the Corsairs avoided the fifth and decisive set by edging the visitors 27-25.  With the game tied at 24-all, UMass Dartmouth won three of the final four points to seal the victory.

Senior Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.) powered the Cadet attack with 12 kills on 52 attempts. Classmate Kelsey Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.) tallied eight winners, while freshman Katherine Crane (Avon, N.Y.) dished out 25 assists.  Sophomore Alex Ruediger (Sandy Lake, Pa.) and senior Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.Y.) combined for 44 digs.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action this afternoon at 2:30 p.m., when the Corsairs host Framingham State in the finale of the seventh annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
