Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. — University of Massachusetts Dartmouth senior captains Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, Mass.) and Erin Fahey (Salem, Mass.) combined to score 28 points to power the Corsairs to a 67-49 victory over visiting Rhode Island College in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Little East Conference Women's Basketball Championship tournament.
Second-seeded UMass Dartmouth (19-7) will square off against third-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 28 on the campus of Eastern Connecticut State University. The Corsairs and the Beacons split their season series with both teams protecting their respective home courts. The Anchorwomen completed their season with an overall record of 7-19.
Garrity led three student-athletes in double figures in scoring with 16 points, on 5-for-7 from the floor, while also pulling in seven rebounds. Fahey registered 12 points, on 4-for-8 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line, while sophomore Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) produced 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior Meghan Keohane (Mansfield, Mass.) hauled in six rebounds, including a game-high five on the offensive end, to help the Corsairs hold a commanding 50-23 advantage on the boards.
Sophomore Alex Moore (West Newbury, Mass.) scored a game-high 24 points, on 8-for-19 from the floor, and junior Devin Hill (Danielson, Conn.) netted 15 points to account for 79.6 percent of the Anchorwomen's offensive output.
UMass Dartmouth utilized a 12-3 run midway through the first half to break a four-point lead and seize control of the contest. Sophomore Bri Hochwarter (Attleboro, Mass.) jumpstarted the run with a triple, while freshman Alicia Kutil (Franklin, Mass.) capped the surge with a lay-up to extend the hosts' advantage to 29-16. The Corsairs took a 38-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Following a Moore three-pointer to open the second half scoring, the hosts answered with a 10-2 run to build a 20-point lead, 48-28. Junior Beth Castantini (Newburyport, Mass.) produced four points during the run, while sophomore Rachel McCarron (Groton, Mass.) closed the surge with a jumper.
Rhode Island College responded with a 6-0 spurt to whittle its deficit to 14 points (50-36) with 9:02 remaining in regulation, but UMass Dartmouth pushed its advantage back to 20-plus points with an 8-1 run. Fahey converted a traditional three-point play to start the surge, while Garrity bookended with it another conventional three-point play.
UMass Dartmouth shot 46.3 percent (25-for-54) from the floor, including 50 percent (15-for-30) in the first half. The Corsairs converted on 93.3 percent (14-for-15) of their attempts from the charity stripe.
