Corsairs Edge Mustangs, 9-8

Box Score

NEWTON, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior Bo Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 8:11 mark of the fourth quarter to lift the Corsairs to a 9-8 victory over home standing Mount Ida College this afternoon at Alumni Field.

UMass Dartmouth captured its second straight win to improve to 2-2, while the Mustangs dropped their season-opener. Mount Ida's opening four games of the season were postponed due to unplayable field conditions.

Freshman DJ Miller (Ashland, Mass.) turned in a well-balanced attack with four points, on two goals and two assists, to lead the Corsairs, while junior Connor Gaffney (Andover, Mass.) scored a season-high three goals.  Junior Andrew Johnson (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Prozinski also registered three points.  Junior Zach Drolette (Burlington, Vt.) won 8-of-14 faceoffs and scooped up two ground balls, and sophomore Eddie Sheridan (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up four ground balls.

Mount Ida cracked the scoring column just 54 seconds into regulation, but the Corsairs responded with four unanswered goals.  Gaffney ignited the surge with his first marker of the contest, while Miller found the back of the net to give the visitors their first advantage of the afternoon.  Prozinski played a role in the next two goals, scoring the first and setting up Gaffney to cap the first quarter scoring.

UMass Dartmouth utilized its special teams in the second stanza to extend its advantage.  Johnson netted an unassisted marker with the extra-man, while Gaffney completed his hat trick with just 13 seconds remaining in the half to raise the visitors' lead to 6-2 at the intermission.

The Mustangs found their offense early in the third quarter, scoring three times in the opening five minutes to whittle their deficit to 6-5.   Seven minutes later, the hosts pulled even when Lucas Stralka potted his third marker of the match to forge a 6-all tie entering the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Sophomore Sean Peters (Medway, Mass.) stemmed the tide for the Corsairs with his fourth tally of the campaign.  However, Mount Ida scored a pair of goals one minute, 16 seconds apart to take its first lead since the opening minute of the contest.  Miller forced the fifth and final tie midway through the quarter, while Prozinski netted the game-winner 57 seconds later.

Sophomore Matt Lafond (Bridgewater, Mass.) made five of his eight saves in the third quarter to earn his second straight victory.  Tyler McElreath came off the bench after the halftime intermission for the Mustangs to stop nine of the 12 attempts he faced, but was saddled with the loss.  Cam Hayward started in between the pipes, but was replaced after making eight saves.

The Corsairs reached double digits in shots in three of the four frames to hold a 38-30 advantage.  UMass Dartmouth held a slim 33-32 lead in ground balls, while committing four fewer turnovers (21-17).

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, when the Corsairs travel to Nichols College.
