Corsairs Can't Solve Bartell, Engineers

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Massachusetts Institute of Technology scored four of the final five goals to earn a hard fought 9-5 victory over visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this evening in a NCAA Division III men's lacrosse game.

The Corsairs held a 39-34 advantage in shots, but the visitors were unable to solve Eric Bartell.  Bartell limited UMass Dartmouth to just five goals, while turning back 22 attempts, including nine shots in the third quarter.

Junior Bo Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) registered a goal and an assist for three points to lead the Corsair offensive attack.  Senior Connor Gaffney (Andover, Mass.) netted his 10th marker of the season, while sophomore Austin Titus (Gloucester, Mass.) produced his first goal of the campaign.  Freshman DJ Miller (Ashland, Mass.) scooped up a team-high five ground balls, while junior Dan Brown (Beverly, Mass.) won 9-of-15 faceoffs.

Despite trailing 3-2 at the halftime intermission, junior Alex Lucas (Brookfield, Mass.) evened the contest less than two minutes into the third quarter with his fourth marker of the season.  However, MIT regained its advantage with back-to-back scores to close out the frame.

UMass Dartmouth trimmed its deficit to 5-4, when Prozinski netted an unassisted marker.  That would be as close as the Corsairs would get as the Engineers extended their lead with consecutive goals.  The visitors responded with Titus' first goal midway through the frame, but the hosts used another two-goal run to cap the scoring.

Sophomore Scott Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) earned the start in net for the visitors, but left the contest after stopping all three shots he faced in the opening six minutes, 39 seconds.  Classmate Matt Lafond (Bridgewater, Mass.) played the final 53 minutes, 21 seconds, making 10 saves.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, when the Corsairs host Little East Conference rival Plymouth State University at Cressy Field.
