Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's lacrosse team raced out to a five-goal, first period advantage to post a 10-3 victory over Norwich University this afternoon at Bayside Field on the campus of Roger Williams University.
The Corsairs collected their first win of the season to improve to 1-2, while the Cadets dropped their season-opener.
UMass Dartmouth used a well-balanced attack as seven student-athletes cracked the scoring column, including six players with at least one marker. Junior Bo Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) produced a season-high five points, on four goals and an assist, to lead the hosts, while classmate Alex Lucas (Brookfield, Mass.) found the back of the net twice. Junior Zach Drolette (Burlington, Vt.) went 4-for-6 from the X, while classmate Joey Christopher (Chelmsford, Mass.) scooped up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Sophomore Matt Lafond (Bridgewater, Mass.) earned his first collegiate victory for the Corsairs, making five saves in 60 minutes of action.
The Corsairs came charging out of the gates, building a 5-0 advantage after the first quarter. Prozinski opened the scoring at the 3:03 mark to give UMass Dartmouth a lead it would not relinquish with an unassisted tally. Freshman Sean Matthews (Wellesley, Mass.) ripped his first collegiate goal off a transition rush to extend the hosts' advantage to 2-0. Prozinski sandwiched a pair of goals between a junior Andrew Johnson (Hopkinton, Mass.) score to close out the frame.
Norwich was finally able to solve Lafond with less than five minutes remaining in the second stanza. Senior Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) converted a man-up opportunity to put the visitors on the scoreboard. However, Prozinski finished a feed from freshman DJ Miller (Ashland, Mass.) to send the Corsairs into the halftime intermission leading 6-1.
UMass Dartmouth increased its advantage to 7-1, but the Cadets scored a pair of goals within the span of two minutes and 16 seconds cut their deficit to 7-3. The Corsairs sealed the contest with three unanswered goals, including the final two scores from Lucas, to earn their first win of the 2015 campaign.
Senior Ryan Fecteau (Danvers, Mass.) suffered the loss, stopping seven shots in 45 minutes of action. Sophomore Chris Gersh (Hudson, N.H.) came on in relief at the beginning of the fourth quarter and turned aside three attempts.
UMass Dartmouth held a 35-16 advantage in shots, while winning the ground ball battle, 34-26. The hosts went 9-for-16 at the X, including 3-for-3 in the third quarter, and converted 10 of their 14 clearing attempts. The Corsairs demonstrated a solid ride, limiting the Cadets to 13-for-25.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, when the Corsairs travel to Mount Ida College (0-0).
