Box Score GORHAM, Maine -- University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior Bo Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) had three goals and one assist as the Corsairs held off a determined comeback bid by the University of Southern Maine to post a 9-5 victory in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win was the second straight for the Corsairs, and improved their overall record to 5-7. The Huskies had their three-game winning streak snapped to fall to 6-3 overall. Both teams are now 1-2 in conference play.
Prozinski scored all his points in the first half as the Corsairs built a 5-1 lead before halftime. The visitors pushed their advantage to five goals on two occasions in the third quarter before the Huskies grabbed some momentum to pull back within two.
Down 7-2 after UMD junior Connor Gaffney (Andover, Mass.) scored a man-up goal with 8:57 to play in the third quarter, the Huskies tallied the next three goals to get back into the game. Junior Jaymz McStowe (Plymouth, Mass.) and senior Burleigh Desjardins (Brunswick, Maine) scored 87 seconds apart to make it 7-4, and swung the momentum to the Huskies. Sophomore Cody Hutchins (Vergennes, Vt.) got the Huskies back within two after taking a pass from McStowe and beating UMD sophomore goalie Matt Lafond (Bridgewater, Mass.) with 3:34 to go.
Junior Tyler Prentice (Chelmsford, Mass.) took some of the steam out of the Huskies comeback bid when he scored his second goal of the game with 30 seconds left in the period.
Rookie DJ Miller (Ashland, Mass.) scored the only goal of the final quarter with 4:12 left for UMD to ensure the win.
Miller and Prentice had two goals apiece for the Corsairs. Gaffney chipped in with a goal and one assist. Junior Alex Lucas (Brookfield, Mass.) passed out two assists. Lafond played a strong game in the cage recording 15 saves to earn his fifth win of the season. Sophomore Patrick Lucas (Brookfield, Mass.) scooped up a team-high seven ground balls.
Southern Maine received two goals from junior Austin Watts (Westbrook, Maine), both coming on solo efforts from behind the cage. Freshmen Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine) and John Bossi (Billerica, Mass.) split the goalie duties for the Huskies. Bessette played the opening half and stopped four shots while Bossi had five saves in the second half. Junior Eddie Barrasso (Wilmington, Mass.) led all players with nine ground balls.
The Huskies held a slight edge in shots (33-28) and ground ball (36-29). The Corsairs were successful on 20 of 24 clear attempts. The Huskies were successful on 10 of 17 clears.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, when the Corsairs host Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut State University.
