Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth swept Mitchell College, 3-0, this evening in a NCAA Division III women's volleyball match. The Corsairs improved to 4-6, while dropping the Mariners to 1-3.
Sophomore Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) led all players with nine kills, while senior Jasmine Burris (New Bedford, Mass.) collected eight kills for the Corsairs. Junior Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) registered a game-high 23 assists and also chipped in with five digs. Senior Brianna Perry (Acushnet, Mass.) protected the backline with nine digs, one more than classmate Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, Mass.).
The Mariners fell behind 5-2 to start the opening set, but charged back to whittle their deficit to only one, a run that was capped off with a block by sophomore Myia Williams (Roselle, N.J.) and junior Amanda Rowan (Sandy Hook, Conn.). Rowan led the way for the Mariners, with seven kills and one assisted block. UMass Dartmouth would not let its visitors get any closer, pulling away to take the set 26-13.
The Corsairs jumped out to a quick start in the second set, riding Burris' hot hand for three of the opening four points. The Mariners battled back to take a 7-6 advantage, led by senior Kaisa Caramante (Old Lyme, Conn.), who forced four straight errors by the hosts. UMass Dartmouth closed the second stanza in decisive fashion, winning seven of the final nine points to double its advantage.
The start of the third set was a little bit different than the first two. Mitchell won the opening three points, capped by senior Nicole Caminiti (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) two winners. However, the Corsairs would regain their form and seal their third shutout of the season.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 17, when the Corsairs host Bridgewater State.
