Corsairs Cruise Past Anchorwomen, 4-1

Box Score

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sophomore Abby Silva (Fall River, Mass.) scored two goals and added an assist for a career-high five points to lead the Corsairs to a 4-1 victory over Rhode Island College Friday night in a Little East Conference women's soccer match on Cressy Field.

UMass Dartmouth (3-2-1, 1-0-1 LEC) used a well-rounded attack as five student-athletes registered at least one point to help the hosts produce a season-high four markers.  Junior Talia D'Ambruoso (Warwick, R.I.) netted a goal and handed out a helper for three points, while classmate Nicole Starkey-Cox (Warwick, R.I.) rounded out the Corsairs' scoring contingent.

The Corsairs cracked the scoring column in the 19th minute, when Silva set up D'Ambruoso for her second goal of the season. Despite outshooting their guests 11-1, the hosts took a 1-0 advantage into the break.

UMass Dartmouth doubled its lead in the 53rd minute, when Silva pounced on junior Kayli Berche's (Fairhaven, Mass.) rebound and deposited it into the vacant net.  The Corsairs struck twice—19 seconds apart—to build a commanding 4-0 advantage. Silva netted her second goal of the match, while Starkey ran onto a thru pass from junior Erica Farias (Tiverton, R.I.) and flicked her first marker of the campaign over the charging goalkeepers' shoulder.

Less than a minute later, the Anchorwomen (1-7, 0-2) finally broke through.  Sophomore Brooke Morris (Lincoln, R.I.) slipped a pass from the middle through UMass Dartmouth's backline.  Freshman Brittany DeGrooth (Westerly, R.I.) gathered the pass in stride and tucked her second goal of the season inside the near post.

Sophomore Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass.) made two saves to earn the win, while freshman Stefanie Togbasi (Providence, R.I.) stopped eight attempts.

The Corsairs held a commanding 24-5 advantage in shots, while taking eight of the nine corner kick opportunities.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, when the Corsairs host Bridgewater State.
