Corsairs triumph over Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth won in straight sets over the Lasell women's volleyball team by set scores of 25-22, 25-22, and 26-24 in non-conference action Tuesday evening in the Lasell Athletic Center.

The Corsairs would improve to 8-9 on the season and would registrar the sixth shutout doubling the number from last year. With the loss, Lasell would fall to 5-13.

Junior Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) led all players in the match with nine kills and added in five digs. Classmate Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) coordinated the Corsairs attack with a game high 17 assist, 10 digs and four kills, while Senior Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, Mass.) finished off seven kills and three services aces and setting a new career-high with 14 digs.

Freshman Odina Ellis (Providence, R.I.) and senior Sharisse Scott-Rawlins (Brockton, Mass.), orchestrated the Lasers offence by contributing five kills each. Senior Heather Longley (North Granby, Conn.) pitched in to the attack with four kills, while sophomore libero Caitlyn Garcia (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the Lasers' defense with 13 digs.

The Corsairs survived the back and forth set, but eventually pulling out the 25-22 victory via a kill from freshman Cait Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.). Set two featured seven ties of its own, as the Lasers came out with a different pace on the offensive side. With Scott-Rawlins serving, the home team put together four straight points – including two service aces – to spring the Lasers up 7-3, forcing a Corsairs timeout. The Corsairs forged ahead at the deficit and took the lead and never looked back for the set victory of 25-22.

The third set started out very different as the Lasers would create an enormous lead of 23-11, but UMass Dartmouth was able to put together a few points as time went on. UMass Dartmouth then went on an offensive assault to score the next 13 points, all of which began in the hands of Bowes, to turn the match around 24-23.

UMass Dartmouth will return to tri-match action on Saturday, October 3 as the Corsairs host Mount Ida and Eastern Nazarene at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. both for a second time this year.
