Wheaton Slides Past Men's Lacrosse, 13-10

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth men's lacrosse led by as much as four goals in the first half, but Wheaton secured five goals in the fourth quarter to have the last word in a closely-contested 13-10 win over the Corsairs on Saturday afternoon.

The Corsairs suffer their third-consecutive loss, falling to 2-4 on the season, while Wheaton climbs back ahead of .500 with a 4-3 record. Senior attack Bo Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) registered his second-straight four-goal outing, tacking on two assists, while junior goalkeeper Matt LaFond (Bridgewater, Mass.) turned aside 15 shots in a full 60 minutes.

For the Lyons, sophomore Scott Whear (Duxbury, Mass.) and junior Ryan Gjerset (Austin, Texas) each tabulated three goals apiece.

Wheaton began scoring with two goals within the first five minutes of play. The Corsairs then quickly evened the margin within the course of 30 seconds, as seniors Alex Lucas (Brookfield, Mass.) and Andrew Johnson (Hopkinton, Mass.) each netted goals off Prozinski assists.

UMass Dartmouth then increased its lead to end the first quarter and lead off the second, potting three unanswered goals. Sophomore DJ Miller (Ashland, Mass.) registered the final goal of the first quarter before Prozinski and senior Joey Bouthillette (Northbridge, Mass.) netted the first two goals of the second.

After a Wheaton score, Prozinski buried two-straight man-up goals to increase the advantage to its highest of the game at 7-3. The Lyons then regained composure to close the half, scoring four of the final five goals of the stanza despite a Corsair score from freshman Zach Walker (Andover, Mass.) to enter halftime down just 8-7.

The third quarter saw just two goals, one for each squad, with Prozinski capping his scoring day just two minutes in. Gjerset then cut his team's deficit back to just one at 10:41.

Tides turned in the fourth, as the Lyons stepped up the aggressive play. Wheaton outscored the Corsairs 5-1 in the final 15 minutes despite gathering the only four penalties of the quarter. Kyle Rumberger (Hyannis, Mass.) tied the game 31 seconds in until Bouthillette put the visitors back on top two minutes later. The rest of the game was all Lyons, as Wheaton rattled off the last four goals including back-to-back tallies from Gjerset to regain the lead for good.

Wheaton outshot the Corsairs 45-26 on the game, despite UMass Dartmouth holding a 10-8 shot advantage for the last quarter. Lyon senior goalkeeper Ryan Clair (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) made six stops on the day, including three in the last 15 minutes to preserve the win.

The Corsairs will look to snap the skid on Tuesday, as UMass Dartmouth hosts MIT at 7 p.m. at Cressy Field.
