Box Score BOSTON – Senior Alex Lucas (Brookfield, Mass.) fired a man-up goal from the arc past the UMass Boston goalkeeper with less than two minutes remaining in overtime on Wednesday, lifting UMass Dartmouth men's lacrosse to a 10-9 road conference win at Boston College High School.
The Corsairs have now taken four straight games over their in-state LEC rival, dating back to April 26, 2014, and have won three of their last four outings.
Just seconds into a Beacon penalty halfway through the extra frame, senior Bo Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) took the ball across the middle, finding an open Lucas, who unleashed a rocket over the right shoulder of UMass Boston senior goalkeeper Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.). The Beacons had forced overtime moments earlier, as senior Michael Kennedy (Hudson, Mass.) scored with just one second left on the regulation clock, tying the score at 9.
Lucas finished with a goal and an assist on the day, while Prozinski led all scorers with a hat trick and the lone assist. Senior Joey Bouthillette (Northbridge, Mass.) registered a game-high three helpers. The Beacons (10-4, 2-2 LEC) were paced by a pair of goals from three different players.
The Corsairs (5-8, 2-2 LEC) maintained a slight lead throughout much of the contest, taking a two-goal lead heading into halftime. A man-up Prozinski goal at 7:59 in the second quarter tied the game at three after both teams trading goals. Senior Andrew Johnson (Hopkinton, Mass.) and sophomore DJ Miller (Ashland, Mass.) then scored in the final five minutes of the half to put the visitors up 5-3.
Each team posted two goals in the third quarter, keeping the UMass Dartmouth advantage at two. Miller tallied again for the first score of the fourth stanza to push the margin to 5-8, but UMass Boston gathered for a rally. Conor Smith (Kingston, Mass.) and Jack Dillon (Barrington, R.I.) rattled off back-to-back goals, bringing the hosts within one.
Johnson scored again at 9:41 to add more cushion, but the Beacons made the most of the time remaining, netting two man-up goals in the last two minutes off the sticks of Matthew Duggan (Weymouth, Mass.) and Kennedy.
UMass Dartmouth then needed just four seconds of a slashing penalty against UMass Boston in overtime to make the winning play.
Junior Matt LaFond (Bridgewater, Mass.) rises to 4-7 on the season in goal for the Corsairs, as he turned aside 10 shots on the game. His counterpart, Frehill, made 12 stops in just his fourth loss on the season.
UMass Dartmouth stays in conference play on Saturday, hosting Keene State, currently ranked seventh in New England, for a 1 p.m. start at Cressy Field.
