Field Hockey Outgunned by MIT, 4-1

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Engineers commanded possession throughout the contest and junior Emily Penn netted a hat trick, as host MIT outmatched the UMass Dartmouth field hockey team on Saturday by a 4-1 score.

The Basics

Score: MIT 4, UMass Dartmouth 1
Records:
MIT 2-0 | UMass Dartmouth 0-2

How it Happened

Scoring came quick from the opening whistle, with MIT's Katie Notarangelo putting her team up just three minutes in. A scramble off the Engineers' third penalty corner resulted in Notarangleo scoring from Rachel Rotteveel at the far post.

The Corsairs were quick to respond, when two minutes later junior Delaney Burns (Wayne, N.J.) registered her third goal in just two games thus far, forcing the ball through a scrum and past MIT goalkeeper Cailey Talbot.

UMass Dartmouth was able to get a couple more chances soon after, but the remainder of the contest was largely controlled by the Engineers. MIT more than tripled the Corsairs' shot total in the first half, but the visitors held MIT to just one more goal on the stanza thanks in part to junior goalkeeper Allison Burke's (Franklin, Mass.) eight stops.

Penn's last two goals came late in the second half, effectively putting the game out of reach. At the 47th minute mark, she scored on a one-on-one opportunity against Burke, and then connected on a penalty corner in the 67th minute.
