Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Juniors Morgan Derosia (Vernon, Vt.) and Emma Best (Salisbury, Vt.) each scored six goals to lead Castleton to an 18-9 Little East Conference women's lacrosse victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.
The visiting Spartans (4-4, 1-0 LEC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the strength of Best's hat trick in the opening 10:05 of action, as Derosia and Best combined for five goals in an eight minute stretch late in the first half to extend that margin to 11-3 at the break. The host Corsairs (3-5, 0-1 LEC) crept back to within seven on senior Brooke Scahill's (Gales Ferry, Conn.) marker seven minutes after intermission, but Derosia's goal with 18:42 remaining gave Castleton its second 10-goal lead of the day and helped the visitors ice their triumph.
Derosia added a pair of assists to finish with eight points in the win for the Spartans, who received a hat trick and a helper from junior Erin Shuttle (Georgia, Vt.) along with two tallies and an assist off the stick of senior Erin McKenna (York, Maine). Senior Katie Feeney (Johnston, Vt.) chipped in with a goal and an assist for Castleton, which received three assists from senior Megan Wood (Waterford, Vt.) along with a pair of helpers off the stick of junior Megan Krumm (Cornwall, N.Y.).
Scahill finished with a hat trick and an assist for four points in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which also received hat tricks from senior Brooke Martel (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Sam Muir (Sturbridge, Mass.). Sophomore Emma Delacy (New Bedford, Mass.) collected an assist for the hosts in the first meeting between the two schools.
Senior Samantha Hebb (Ashland, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with six first half saves for Castleton, which received a second half stop from freshman Raven Payne (Cornwall, Vt.). Senior Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass.) registered seven saves in the opening 30 minutes of play for UMass Dartmouth, while junior Bridget Harrington (Florence, Mass.) made five second half stops. The Spartans outshot the Corsairs by a 33-20 margin overall (30-16 on goal) and held a 19-10 edge in draw controls for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Simmons in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening at Cressy Field beginning at 7:00 pm, while Castleton heads to New London, N.H. on Wednesday afternoon for a non-league clash with Colby-Sawyer that begins at 4:00 pm.
