Men's Lacrosse Drops 16-10 Season Opening Decision At Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. --  Junior Pat Leary (Wakefield, Mass.) scored four goals and added an assist for five points, as Salve Regina notched a 16-10 non-league college men's lacrosse victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Toppa Field.

Junior Brendan Kelly (Long Beach, N.Y.) added four goals as well for the host Seahawks (2-0), who built an 8-5 advantage at the break and extended that margin to seven (12-5) on freshman Ryan Reilly's (Hingham, Mass.) marker with 5:53 to play in the third stanza.  The visiting Corsairs (0-1) sliced their deficit to six (13-7) on senior Donovan Prozinski's (Ashland, Mass.) tally late in the frame, but Salve Regina responded with two goals in the opening 3:45 of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the afternoon and post its second straight triumph.

Freshman Brendan Treacy (Danvers, Mass.) added a hat trick in the win for the Seahawks, who received four points from Reilly along with a pair of tallies off the stick of junior Ryan Heeter (Wading River, N.Y.).  Junior Connor Cunningham (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) earned his second triumph of the young season in goal for the hosts with a 22-save performance, as Salve Regina held a 43-37 edge in total shots and a 17-11 edge in the face off circle for the contest.

Sophomore Tim Jordan (Sandwich, Mass.) matched Leary with four goals and an assist in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received two tallies each from Prozinski and junior Jeff Wenzel (Medway, Mass.).  Sophomore Zak Wirsen (Bourne, Mass.) added a marker and helper on the day for the visitors, who received a goal from junior Sam Kozimor (Wrentham, Mass.) and an assist off the stick of senior Mike Rizzo (Bridgewater, Mass.).  Freshman Charlie Gamache (Dartmouth, Mass.) made nine saves in three quarters of play in his collegiate debut in net for the Corsairs, who received three stops from senior Ted McCaffery (Pepperell, Mass.).

UMass Dartmouth heads to Bristol, R.I. on Wednesday afternoon for a non-league outing with Roger Williams beginning at 4:00 pm, while Salve Regina hosts Johnson & Wales in a non-league clash on Tuesday evening at Toppa Field that begins at 7:00 pm.
