Women's Basketball Notches 81-49 Senior Day Victory Over Southern Maine

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Senior Kayla McMahon (Hanover, Mass.) scored a career-high 27 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead UMass Dartmouth to an 81-49 Little East Conference women's basketball victory over Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.

The host Corsairs (15-10, 10-6 LEC) used an 18-2 first quarter run to overcome an early 11-point deficit and take a 23-17 lead after the first 10 minutes of action, and UMass Dartmouth used 14 unanswered points in the first 4:51 of the second stanza while holding the visiting Huskies (10-15, 5-11 LEC) to seven points in the frame in opening up a 49-24 advantage at the break.  The hosts held Southern Maine to a 16 percent (6-37) shooting effort in the second and third quarters combined and led by as many as 36 points in the second half to complete a sweep of the two-game season series between the squads.

McMahon sizzled from the field in connecting on seven of her nine attempts from behind the arc for the Corsairs, while fellow senior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.) just missed on a possible quadruple double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, nine steals and seven assists for the winners.  Sophomore Jordan Moretti (Johnston, R.I.) added 17 points, nine boards, six assists and four steals for UMass Dartmouth, which received 14 points, nine caroms and three steals from junior Lauren Empey (Middleboro, Mass.).  The Corsairs shot 43 percent (29-68) from the floor overall and canned 11 three-pointers on the day, as UMass Dartmouth held a 48-43 rebounding advantage and converted 27 turnovers into 28 points.

Sophomore Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla.) scored 12 points, dished out four assists and recorded three steals in the setback for Southern Maine, which received nine points from freshman Megan King (Derry, N.H.) along with eight points and six rebounds from senior Katie Howe (New Boston, N.H.).  The Huskies shot 24 percent (16-66) from the field and were outscored in the paint by a 20-point margin (36-16) for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth is seeded fifth in the upcoming Little East Conference Championships, as the Corsairs will travel to fourth-seeded UMass Boston for a league quarterfinal round outing on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm.  Today's game marked the season finale for Southern Maine.
