Box Score BOSTON, Mass. -- Freshman Lauren Whitman (Mansfield, Mass.) scored four goals, as Simmons held off a late charge to notch a 13-10 non-league college women's lacrosse victory over UMass Dartmouth Monday afternoon at Daly Field.
The host Sharks (2-0) overcame a pair of early one-goal deficits by scoring seven unanswered tallies in a 16-minute stretch (including a pair from Whitman) en route to a 9-4 advantage at the break, and Simmons struck for three of the first four scores after intermission in a 1:43 span to take its largest edge of the day (12-5) on senior Kingsley Richards' (Lexington, Mass.) goal with 25:04 to play in the contest. The visiting Corsairs (1-1) responded with three unanswered goal, including two from sophomore Bella Mancini (Bellingham, Mass.), to close back to within four (12-8) with 13:33 remaining, and after Whitman's man-up marker with 7:13 to play gave the hosts a five-goal cushion, Mancini and sophomore Hannah Niemi (Fairhaven, Mass.) added tallies for UMass Dartmouth in the closing 5:12 of action to account for the final margin.
Freshman Emily Boedeker (Portland, Maine) added a hat trick in the triumph for the Sharks, who received a pair of goals and two assists from Richards along with a marker and helper off the stick of sophomore Lilly Devitt (Belmont, Mass.). Junior Molly Reinhold (Mystic, Conn.), sophomore Ailia Rochefort (Dover, N.H.) and freshman Sidney Pilot (Pomfret, Vt.) added single scores for Simmons, which received three assists from junior Cindy Murphy (Revere, Mass.).
Mancini followed up her seven goal performance in the season opening win over Elms with six more tallies in the setback for the Corsairs, who also received a hat trick from Niemi. Senior Sam Muir (Sturbridge, Mass.) chipped in with a marker and helper for the visitors, who received an assist off the stick of junior Emma Delacy (New Bedford, Mass.).
Sophomore Erin McIntyre (Cumberland, R.I.) picked up the win in goal with an eight save effort for Simmons, while senior Bridget Harrington (Florence, Mass.) made 11 stops in the setback for UMass Dartmouth. The Sharks outshot the Corsairs by a 35-23 margin overall (24-18 on goal), but the visitors held a 14-10 advantage in draw controls for the contest.
