Corsairs to Parley with Panthers with Bowl Game Hopes on the Line

SENIOR DAY
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team hosts Plymouth State at noon on Saturday. If the Corsairs can pull of the win, they will be looking at a potential bowl game bid. The team will also celebrate its 11 seniors, Matt Gisonno, Chris Gomes, Douglas Machado, Paul Osayande, Malik Gibson, Gee Napoleon, Kyle Kauzens, Adam Boulrisse, Andrew Paulus, Marcus Elysee and Sean Reall.

BIG TIME WIN
  • UMass Dartmouth took down first-place Bridgewater State, 26-20, two weeks ago to move to second place in the MASCAC standings.
  • Sophomore Trell Best picked off a pass on Bridgewater State's potential game-tying drive with 45 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
  • Sophomore quarterback Dante Aviles-Santos threw for 236 yards and four touchdown passes, upping his MASCAC lead to 19 passing TD's, he also added 61 yards on the ground.
  • After missing the previous two weeks, 5th-year senior Douglas Machado came away with 84 receiving yards and two scores, while senior Keenan Little and freshman Marvens Jean had TD catches as well.
  • 5th-year senior Chris Gomes led the Corsairs with 13 tackles with 10 solo. Senior JP Mason finished with 12 tackles and nine solo.
  • Sophomore Shane Meerbott picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards to join Best with an INT.
BOWL IS THE GOAL
  • With a win on Saturday, there is a good chance that the Corsairs would be a in, and potentially host, a New England Bowl Game.
  • It would be the first bowl game appearance for the Corsairs since 2004.
OFFENSE ON TOP
  • It's been a banner year for the Corsairs, who have been toward the top of the conference in offense all season.
  • UMass Dartmouth ranks first points per game (31.0), yards per game (436.6), passing touchdowns (24) and rushing yards per game (217.3).
  • They also lead the MASCAC with 3,929 yards of total offense.
  • Aviles-Santos leads the conference with 19 touchdown passes with five more on the ground and is third in the league with 196.0 passing yards per game.
  • Junior Luis Gonzalez is second in the MASCAC in rushing yards per game (85.7), while Jean is right behind him in third (77.6). 
  • Machado ranks second in the league in receiving yards per game (83.9) and touchdowns (8).
DEFENSIVE STATS
  • The Corsairs lead the MASCAC with 13 interceptions and sophomore Logan Chappell is first in INT's (5).
  • Mason leads the team with 8.0 tackles per game, while junior Josh Lacerte is second in the conference with 6.5 sacks and freshman Sam Alicea is fourth with five sacks.
NO. 8 IN THE REGION
  • UMass Dartmouth is currently No. 8 in Region I in the NCAA Regional Rankings.
  • The Corsairs are looking for its eighth win, which would be its most since the 2003 season.
  • Framingham State is the only other MASCAC team in the Regional Rankings, coming in at No. 7.
SCOUTING PLYMOUTH STATE
  • Plymouth State started its season 0-4 with non-conference losses to Castleton (13-0) and Husson (10-7), and MASCAC losses to Bridgewater State (27-24) and Framingham State (33-0).
  • Since then, the Panthers have won five straight games over WestConn (16-13), Fitchburg State (36-0), Worcester State (42-14), Westfield State (17-7) and Mass. Maritime (27-7).
  • Defense is the strength of Plymouth State. They lead the MASCAC, allowing just 13.8 points per game. They are third in the league in rushing yards allowed per game (125.3) and fourth in passing yards allowed (162.3).
  • Senior Quinn Girard is third in the conference with 9.2 tackles per game
  • The Panthers rank toward the bottom in most offensive categories, but they are fourth in rushing yards per game (151.1)
  • Junior Bryan Warren ranks fifth in the MASCAC with five touchdown receptions.
PANTHERS' LAST TIME OUT
  • Plymouth State won its fifth straight game over Mass. Maritime, 27-7.
  • Senior Ryan Milliken returned the opening kickoff for an 85-yard touchdown to jumpstart the team.
  • The Panthers scored on a 59-yard touchdown pass from senior Brian McGough to senior Brett Lavanchy in the second quarter.
  • They scored again in the second on 17-yard pass from senior Gavin Moody to Lavanchy.
  • Senior Manny Sanchez took home a 23-yard rush for a score in the third quarter.
  • The Plymouth State offense had a total of 338 yards, while Mass. Maritime was limited to 198 yards of total offense.
  • Sanchez rushed 21 times for 74 yards and a touchdown, while Coyle added 18 carries for 47 yards. Moody also picked up nine yards on the ground.
  • Lavanchy completed 16-of-22 passes for two touchdowns and an interception. Moody finished with six catches for 77 yards and a score, while McGough snagged the other TD throw and finished with two receptions for 67 yards.
