UMass Dartmouth Aims to Take Step Forward in 2022

2022 marks the 50th year of UMass Dartmouth women's tennis

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The 50th season of women's tennis at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth begins at home on Sept. 1 at 3:30 p.m. against Lesley. Head Coach Doug Chapman returns for his 10th season with the Corsairs and 46th season total coaching high school and college tennis. Chapman, who recently eclipsed the 700-win mark for his career, enters 2022 with 99 college victories.

UMass Dartmouth returned to the Little East Conference (LEC) Tournament in 2021, finishing with a 7-7 record and 4-4 in the conference. The team came away with LEC wins over Southern Maine (9-0), Castleton (6-3), Salem State (6-3) and WestConn (9-0).

The Corsairs have three returners that saw action last season. Senior McKenzie Ferrari posted a 7-5 record in singles, including 5-3 in LEC matches, with three victories in the No. 5 spot and one playing as the No. 4, Ferrari picked up three wins in doubles competition as well. Senior Alanna O'Connell was 7-7 last season in both singles and double competition, while Junior Ailey Riddick finished 7-5 in singles last season and 8-5 in doubles.

Expected to make an immediate impact is junior transfer IsaBella Winter from Nichols College. Winter is a two-time All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) selection, including earning First-Team honors in singles in 2020. Six other newcomers will add to the depth of the roster.

After the match against Lesley, UMass Dartmouth is at Curry (Sept. 3) and home against Salve Regina (Sept. 7). The LEC schedule opens at Southern Maine (Sept. 10) before four more non-conference matches and seven LEC contests to finish the regular season.
