Women's Track & Field Excels at Lyon Invitational

Corsairs boast eight PR's and four season's best marks at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – It was another outstanding weekend of action for the UMass Dartmouth women's track & field team, which saw eight personal records achieved at the Lyon Invitational – hosted by Wheaton College. The Corsairs also added four season's best marks in the non-team scoring meet on Saturday at the Haas Athletic Center.
 
In the field events, junior Isabella Taccogna was solid in the high jump, taking second overall with a height of 1.51 meters (4' 11.50"). That mark was also a season-best effort. Rookie Belleya Franck took fifth overall in the event, notching a mark of 1.41 meters (4' 7.50"). Taccongna went on to earn seventh in the triple jump with a season's best mark of 9.98 meters (32' 9").
 
It was a full field in the shot put, paced by graduate student Kate Hockenbury, who won with a distance of 11.77 meters (38' 7.5"). That mark was also a DIII New England qualifying standard. Sophomore Emily Hesketh earned third overall with a mark of 10.58 meters (34' 8.5"), while junior Lauren Donlan posted sixth overall with a personal record distance of 10.09 meters (33' 1.25").
 
Rookie Olivia Seutter finished 10th overall in the shot put with a throw of 9.57 meters (31' 4.75"), while sophomore Abby O'Leary was 15th with a mark of 8.75 meters (28' 8.5"). Senior Mia Mejia-Maalouf posted 19th with a distance of 8.34 meters (27' 4.5") as graduate student Alexa Lemieux was 20th with a season's best mark of 8.12 meters (26' 7.75"). Rounding out the shot put action was rookie Caroline Lander, who was 21st with a throw of 7.62 meters (25' 0").
 
The weight throw saw Hesketh earn third overall with a throw of 13.48 meters (44' 2.75"). Hockenbury posted fifth with a distance of 11.55 meters (37' 10.75"), while Donlan was sixth with a personal record mark of 11.54 meters (37' 10.5"). Mejia-Maalouf earned 12th with a distance of 9.73 meters (31' 11.25"), followed by O'Leary in 14th (9.24m; 30' 3.75") and Lander in 20th (7.76m; 25' 5.5").
 
The track events saw Franck finish third in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 10.00. Rookie Phoebe Gesner went on to post ninth in the 60-meter dash with a personal record mark of 8.36, while Franck placed 19th in the event with a time of 8.84.
 
It was another packed Corsair field in the Mile with eight different competitors in the blue and gold. Graduate student Emma Steedman led the way, finishing seventh overall with a personal record time of 5:25.62. Senior Anya Aadland earned 12th – also achieving a personal record – with a time of 5:34.50, while grad student Emily Philbrook was 13th with a time of 5:34.96.
 
Senior Bee Greenberg was next across for the Corsairs in the Mile, notching 14th with a season's best time of 5:39.93 as classmate Julia Latura earned 15th with a mark of 5:41.90. Taking 17th overall was rookie Sara Lopez with a time of 5:52.48 as fellow first year Ashlyn Byrnes was 20th in 6:09.34. Rookie Alexia Gonsalves rounded out the action in 21st with a time of 6:11.96.
 
The 600-meters was paced by junior Tori Schweitzer, who was sixth overall in 1:56.21 as sophomore Kyla Palmer posted seventh with a time of 2:05.43. Junior Grace Russell finished 12th overall in the 400-meters with a time of 1:11.27, while in the 200-meter invitational, Gesner was eighth with a personal record mark of 27.70. Franck won the 200-meter Open race with a time of 29.13.
 
In the 5000-meters, sophomore Sarah Lynch earned seventh overall, notching a personal record time of 20:20.57. Classmate Sophie Owen earned ninth with a time of 20:56.42, while sophomore Serena Carnes was 10th (21:13.83), followed by rookie Lylah Thibeault in 12th (22:28.56).
 
The women's squad also saw several competitors compete in the mixed 4x400meter relay events. Leading the way was the foursome of Taccogna, Russell and men's rookies Daniel Jordan and Zane Gordon, who finished fifth in a time of 4:01.27.
 
Taking sixth in 4:02.54 was the foursome of Steedman, Lopez, junior James Christie and sophomore Joseph Stanton, while Latura, Aadland, sophomore Cameron Thompson and grad student Davis Preston were seventh in 4:07.44.
 
Earning eighth overall in 4:15.47 was the group of Schweitzer, Greenberg, rookie Jackson Caron and fifth-year Jake Paris, while Byrnes, Gonsalves and sophomore Tyler Scanlon and Zack Shute were ninth in 4:17.44.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to action next Saturday when both squads return to Norton for the Wheaton Invitational.
