Senior captain becomes first xc runner since 2003 to compete at Nationals

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior captain Cameron Thompson competed at the 2025 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning, held at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He became the first Corsair cross country runner since 2003 to represent UMass Dartmouth at the National Championship.

In today's 8k event, Thompson placed 236th overall in a tough and fast field of runners. He posted a time of 26:18.9, finishing ahead of a number of runners from Amherst, Loras, Johns Hopkins, Colby, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Rose-Hulman, North Central, Wesleyan, Colorado College and Wartburg, among others.

Thompson has been the top finisher for UMass Dartmouth in all seven races competed this season. He earned his spot at Nationals following a 15th place finish at the NCAA East Regional on Saturday with a time of 25:04.3. Thompson also collected USTFCCCA All-Region honors for finishing in the top-35 as well as All-New England distinction for checking in the top-20 finishers at the regional meet as the Corsairs took 10th overall amongst 32 total teams.

It has been a season to remember for Thompson, who posted his second straight All-Little East First Team honor on November 1, placing third overall – his best-ever finish – at the 2025 Little East Championships with a time of 25:24.0.

Other highlights of Thompson's season included the UMass Dartmouth Invitation on September 20, where he recorded a personal best time of 24:51.4 to place 12th overall in the 8k event. He also notched his personal best 5k time to open the season at the Suffolk Short Course Classic, taking 14th overall with a time of 16:01.8.

A two-time All-LEC First Team honoree, Thompson competed in seven meets for the Corsairs during the 2024 season. Among the highlights included a then collegiate-best time of 26:02.0 in the 8k, earning sixth overall at the Little East Championships for his first LEC honor. He went on to place 54th overall in 26:35.8 in the 8k at the NCAA East Regional Championships. In his first season, Thompson competed in six meets for the Corsairs, including finishing 21st overall in the 5k at the Wheaton/Babson Season Opener with a time of 17:33.4.

The Corsairs squads now turn their attention to the indoor track & field season, which will begin in January as Thompson looks to add to his LEC title count. In his career, he holds All-LEC Second Team honors in the 1500-meter run, the 4x800 relay and the 1-Mile run.
