Women's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Campaign at Wesleyan

Corsairs see solid performances pace the way in season opener

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The outdoor season got underway in fine fashion for the UMass Dartmouth women's track & field team with a number of outstanding efforts at the Swanson Invitational at Wesleyan University on Saturday.
 
The field events opened with sophomore Emily Hesketh taking second overall in the hammer throw with a mark of 40.34 meters (132' 4"). Senior Neisha Boiteux was close behind, earning fifth overall with a throw of 38.41 meters (126' 0"), while graduate student Alexa Lemieux took 17th overall with a mark of 28.45 meters (93' 4").
 
In the discus throw, Boiteux posted seventh with a mark of 32.90 meters (107' 11"), while rookie Olivia Seutter was right behind in eighth with a mark of 31.63 meters (103' 9"). Hesketh rounded out the action in 10th with a throw of 30.90 meters (101' 5").
 
Shot put action saw graduate student Kate Hockenbury post sixth overall with a throw of 11.27 meters (36' 11.75'). Seutter was eighth with a mark of 10.70 meters (35' 1.25'), while sophomore Abby O'Leary was 11th with a throw of 9.78 meters (32' 1").
 
The javelin was paced by senior Mia Mejia-Maalouf, who finished 13th with a mark of 25.96 meters (85' 2"), while junior Grace Russell finished 14th overall with a mark of 25.80 meters (84' 8"). Rookie Caroline Lander was 22nd overall with a throw of 20.41 meters (67' 0"). The long jump saw rookie Zairah Saint-Jean record 23rd overall with a mark of 4.07 meters (13' 4.25").
 
In the track events, the Corsairs saw graduate student Emily Philbrook take fourth overall in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 40:13.29. Senior Anya Aadland was seventh with a mark of 42:01.50, while sophomore Sophie Owen was eighth in 43:50.44. Rookie Lylah Thibeault posted 10th overall in the event with a time of 49:46.41.
 
Grad student Emma Steedman posted eighth overall in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:59.47, while senior Julia Latura was 25th with a mark of 5:20.46. In the sprint events, sophomore Doreen Vassor was 29th with a time of 14.43, while rookie Erica Markey posted 31st in 14.86.

In the 800-meter run, junior Tori Schweitzer powered to eighth overall in 2:42.79, while sophomore Kyla Palmer was 13th in 2:59.91. Russell went on to post 12th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.94, while junior Isabella Taccogna finished 18th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.12.
 
The 3,000-meter run saw rookie Sara Lopez cross in 11:56.43 – good for 18th overall, while sophomore Serena Carnes was 21st in a time of 12:07.63. Rookie Alexia Gonsalves was 25th in 12:25.68, while sophomore Olivia DeSimone was 29th in 13:29.22.
 
Senior Bee Greenberg paced the way in the 5,000-meter run, earning fifth overall with a time of 19:30.32, while sophomore Sarah Lynch was 13th overall in 20:35.33.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to action next Saturday when it hosts the Corsair Classic at the UMD Track & Field Complex.
