NEW LONDON, Conn. – The UMass Dartmouth men's track & field team concluded action at the 2025 Division III New England Championships on Saturday – hosted by the Coast Guard Academy. The Corsairs were paced by two victories, eight finishes in the top 10, and countless personal records on the day as they posted 33.5 points to place eight of 36 teams.
Rookie
Ancil Alexander added Division III New England Champion to his resume in the discus throw, winning the event with a mark of 51.78 meters (169' 10"). Additionally, it marked a new facility record at Coast Guard's Nitchman Field. Alexander becomes the first Corsair athlete to capture the DIII New England title in the discus throw and is the first UMD athlete to win a field event title at DIII NE's since Jordan Entwistle claimed the javelin throw at the 2019 championships.
Alexander then added another championship title in the shot put, posting a winning throw of 15.46 meters (50' 8.75"). He becomes the first Corsair athlete to capture the DIII New England title in the shot put since Jared Louf-Woods in 2018. It marks the fourth straight weekend of competition in which the rookie has won both the discus and the shot put. Additionally, he remains undefeated on the season in the discus throw with seven straight wins.
Also competing in the discus throw was freshman
Kevin Saenz, who finished 23rd overall with a mark of 39.04 meters (128' 01").
In the high jump event, the Corsairs saw two student-athletes in action, paced by
Sean Patrone. The rookie finished second overall with a mark of 2.00 meters (6' 6.75"), while junior
Vincenzo Videtta was eighth overall with a height of 1.90 meters (6' 2.75").
On the track, the 4x100-meter relay got things going with a seventh place finish. The group, comprised of sophomore
Justin Andrade, rookies
Daniel Jordan and
Zane Gordon, along with senior
Xavier Manuel combined for a time of 42.23.
The 1,500-meter run saw sophomore
Cameron Thompson post 15th overall with a time of 4:03.60, while in the 400-meter dash, Gordon posted 11th overall with a mark of 49.30. In the 400-meter hurdles, rookie
Bryce Tessier had a fine showing, taking 10th overall with a time of 55.77.
Manuel went on to earn 12th in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in a personal record time of 21.89. Also in action in the 200m were Gordon and Jordan, who posted 20th (22.17) and 21st (22.22), respectively. It marked personal record times for both rookies in the 200 as well.
The 3,000-meter steeplechase saw grad student
Davis Preston post seventh overall with a personal record time of 9:50.65 – besting his top time in the event by nearly six seconds from last weekend's win at the Little East Championships.
In the 4x800-meter relay, the group of Thompson and sophomores
Zack Shute,
James Carriere and
Joseph Stanton posted eighth overall with a time of 7:58.17. It was a mark that was not only a season-best time, but a new school record, ecliping the previous mark of 7:59.54 set back in 1987 by Jamie Aubuchon, Scott Magane, Sean McLaughlin and John O'Neil.
UMass Dartmouth will next be in action on May 9-10 as qualified individuals compete at the NEICAAA Open New England Championships, hosted by UMass Amherst.
