Santos secures first weekly honor of the season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Little East Conference (LEC) released its weekly awards for women's basketball with graduate student guard Yasmine Santos earning LEC Player of the Week honors, as announced by the conference on Monday. It marks the first LEC Player of the Week award for Santos following an impressive performance this week for UMass Dartmouth. 

Santos dropped 90 total points, averaging 30 points per game, for the Corsairs during a 1-2 week in Little East action. She shot 49.1 percent from the field (27-55) including one triple (1-3) and 35 made free throws (35-50). The veteran guard also recorded 36 rebounds, five steals, four assists, and a blocked shot across three games. 

Despite a tough road loss at Eastern Connecticut State on January 6, Santos produced a season-high 38 points against the Warriors after making 12-of-21 field goals for a 57.1 shooting percentage. She also matched her season-high of 14 made free throws while finishing the game with 11 rebounds, two assists, and a steal. On January 8 versus UMass Boston, Santos tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 29 points and 10 rebounds to go along with one assist, one steal, and a blocked shot.

Santos finished the week strong with her third straight 20-plus point performance against Western Connecticut State on January 10 to power the Corsairs to a 69-56 conference win. She produced a game-high 23 points against the Wolves after going 7-for-16 from floor including a triple (1-2) and eight made shots form the charity stripe (8-12). Additionally, Santos recorded a season-high three steals in the home victory to help improve the Corsairs to a 2-3 mark in conference action. 

Santos and UMass Dartmouth returns to LEC play on Wednesday, January 14 playing at Southern Maine for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff from the Hill Gymnasium.
