Women's Track & Field Opens Strong at Tufts Spring Stampede

Corsairs post numerous personal bests on day one in Medford

MEDFORD, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth women's outdoor track & field team had a solid opening at Friday's Tufts Spring Stampede, posting a number of personal bests and D3 New England qualifying marks.
 
In the 1500-meters, sophomore Sara Lopez posted 27th overall with a time of 5:16.49. Rookie Nicole Mota finished 39th overall with a mark of 5:46.30. The 3,000-meter steeplechase saw sophomore Alexia Gonsalves place 13th overall with a personal best time of 13:21.19.
 
The 5,000-meters was paced by sophomore Ashlyn Byrnes, who was 22nd overall with a time of 19:27.87 – which was a personal best. Sophomore Natalya LaVita was 29th with a mark of 20:09.19, while classmate Lylah Thibeault posted 31st in 20:20.81. Rookie Alexah Pedder was 32nd with a time of 20:24.84 as junior Liv DeSimone finished 33rd in 20:26.99. Rookie Elena Aponte rounded out the efforts in 36th with a mark of 20:50.44.
 
The final event of the night was the 10,000-meters, which saw graduate student Emily Philbrook finish fifth overall in a time of 39:50.87, which is a D3 New England Provisional qualifying mark. Junior Sophie Owen was close behind, finishing sixth overall in 39:53.08 – another D3 New England Provisional qualifying mark and a new personal best.
 
Junior Sarah Lynch was 10th overall with a time of 40:37.81 – another D3 New England Provisional mark – while junior Serena Carnes had a time of 41:49.08 for 11th overall – which was another personal best.
 
In the field events, sophomore Abby O'Leary placed 14th in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 36.68 meters (120' 4"). The javelin throw saw rookie Elizabeth Fagundes earn 11th overall with 29.22 meters (95' 10"), while junior Maddie Carter was 14th overall with a personal best throw of 25.50 meters (83' 8").
 
The pole vault saw rookie Grace Hawranik place 13th overall with a height of 2.85 meters (9' 4.25").
 
The UMass Dartmouth women's team returns to action on Saturday, traveling back to Tufts to continue action at the Tufts Spring Stampede. A full day of action kicks off at 10am.
