Men's Track & Field Posts 2nd at Coast Guard Spring Invite

Corsairs record four victories and countless NED3 qualifying marks

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Behind a number of strong finishes, the UMass Dartmouth men's outdoor track & field team finished second overall at the Coast Guard Spring Invitational. The Corsairs compiled 135 points, finishing second to only the host Bears (159) in the nine team field.
 
In the 100-meter dash, sophomore Daniel Jordan ran to third overall in a New England D3 Provisional Qualifying and personal-best mark of 10.97. Junior Justin Andrade was fifth overall – also notching an NED3 Provisional Qualifier with a time of 11.02. Rookie Shemar Dillon posted 10th overall in 11.16 – which was also a Provisional qualifier, while sophomore Jonathan Gourdine was 14th in 11.25.
 
The 110-meter hurdles saw rookie Karens Antoine post seventh overall in 16.88, while in the 200-meter dash, Jordan posted third overall with a time of 23.00. Sophomore Zane Gordon was sixth overall in 23.28, while Gourdine posted ninth in 23.57. Dillon took 10th overall in 23.63, while sophomore Maddox Dupre was 16th in 23.95.
 
In the 400-meter dash, Gordon paced the way, earning sixth overall with an NED3 Provisional Qualifying mark of 50.72. Rookie Carlens Elas was eighth in 51.97, while rookie Daniel Ward was 19th in 54.09. The 400-meter hurdles saw rookie Jayden Francois place third overall with an NED3 Automatic Qualifying and personal best mark of 55.33, while rookie Jacob Marques and sophomore Bunmi Fabikun were 10th (1:02.92) and 11th (1:04.00), respectively.
 
Junior Joseph Stanton went on to place third in the 800-meter run, notching an NED3 Provisional Qualifying time of 1:56.84, while rookie Edward Yeboah was 11th in 2:02.52. Junior Tyler Scanlon posted 16th with a mark of 2:05.08. In the 1500-meters, senior Ethan Sylvia finished 13th overall with a mark of 4:15.16, while junior James Carriere was 18th overall in 4:16.87. Classmate Zack Shute finished 21st overall in 4:17.20.
 
It was a victory in the 3000-meter Steeplechase for junior Cameron Thompson, who notched an NED3 Provisional Qualifying and personal best mark of 9:48.13. Senior Colin Ozturk went on to post fourth overall in the 5000-meters with a time of 16:06.68, while rookie Stevie MacLennan finished eighth in 16:34.87. Sophomores Jackson Caron and Connor Bruni placed ninth (16:42.62) and 13th (16:49.48), respectively, while junior Ben Bairos posted 17th (17:29.39).
 
In the 4x400-meter relay, the group of Yeboah, Shute, Thompson and Stanton combined to take fifth overall in 3:31.27. Marques, sophomore Jack Barbato, rookie Sean Benvissuto and Scanlon placed 11th overall in 3:48.27.
 
Sophomore Ancil Alexander claimed victory in the discus throw, posting an NED3 Automatic Qualifying throw of 53.33 meters (174' 11"), while rookie Chalais Saintill posted sixth overall with a mark of 41.90 meters (137' 5") – also an NED3 Provisional Qualifying mark. Rookie Dan McCarthy went on to place 12th overall with a throw of 35.00 meters (114' 10").
 
Rookie Michael Gama then claimed the win in the hammer throw, posting an NED3 Provisional Qualifying mark of 49.83 meters (163' 6") for the victory. Sophomore Mickey Valentino posted fifth overall with an NED3 Provisional Qualifier of 45.54 meters (149' 5"). Rookie Michael Precious posted 14th overall with a throw of 36.23 meters (118' 10").
 
In the high jump, rookie Ewan McLeod finished second overall with an NED3 Automatic Qualifying mark of 2.00 meters (6' 6.75"), while sophomore Sean Patrone was third with a jump of 1.95 meters (6' 4.75") – also an NED3 Automatic Qualifying mark. Senior Vincenzo Videtta placed fourth overall with an NED3 Provisional Qualifying mark of 1.90 meters (6' 2.75"). In the javelin throw, rookie Elijah Perez was sixth with a throw of 44.35 meters (145' 6"), while classmate Malik Escoffery was ninth with a throw of 38.63 meters (126' 9").
 
The long jump saw rookie Bryce Kankam take ninth overall with a jump of 6.38 meters (20' 11.25"), notching an NED3 Provisional mark, while the triple jump saw rookie Marcus Pires place sixth with a distance of 12.25 meters (40' 2.25").
 
UMD picked up another victory in the shot put, along with a 1-2-3 finish as Alexander claimed victory with a throw of 16.54 meters – which was a season's best mark and an NED3 Automatic Qualifier. Valentino placed second overall with a throw of 13.94 meters (45' 9") – another NED3 Provisional mark, while Saintill was third with a mark of 13.77 meters (45' 2.25") for an NED3 Provisional mark of his own.
 
The UMD men's squad is back in action on April 10 and 11, traveling to Medford, Mass., for the Tufts Spring Stampede. Action gets underway on Friday at 1pm and continues on Saturday at 10am.
