Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Wellesley attack proved efficient all evening long, as the Blue downed the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team 3-0 on a rainy Wednesday evening at Cressy Field.
Two of Wellesley's scores came from penalty corner opportunities, as the Blue posted 11 such chances on the evening. In total, the Blue outshot the Corsairs 11-2 on the contest.
UMass Dartmouth's only two shots on the evening came in the second half, as seniors Emily Anderson (Medway, Mass.) and Ali Ladue (Bridgewater, Mass.) each registered a try.
Scoring began midway through the first half, as Wellesley freshman Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.) potted her third goal of the season straight from a Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.) penalty corner. Negron fielded the pass from Hwang and let off a quick fire to beat Corsair keeper Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.).
Leading the Blue offensively on the evening was senior Hannah Flesch (Rockville, Md.), who contributed to the final two Wellesley points. In the 31st minute, Flesch was able to tip a scrum ball to junior Courtney Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn.) who sent a laser into the net and give the Blue a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into the break. The score marked Peterson's 11th tally on the season, tying her for the team lead with senior Anissa Sridhar (London, Ontario).
Despite a stepped-up Corsair attack in the second half, Sridhar and Flesch teamed up for the final goal of the game in the 59th minute. Off a Peterson corner, Sridhar tipped the ball to Flesch, who was able to sneak a shot right by Burke into the corner of the net.
On the night, Burke recorded two saves in each period. For the Blue, Peterson and Negron were the shot leaders, each posting four apiece.
The Corsairs will make their final push for top seeding in the Little East Conference on Saturday as they close out the regular season in Danbury, Conn. at Western Connecticut at 1 p.m. Next up for Wellesley is the NEWMAC Championship, which kicks off next Tuesday.
