Box Score 2015 Little East Field Hockey Bracket
DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore Delaney Burns (Wayne, N.J.) provided the only scoring the UMass Dartmouth field hockey team needed on Saturday to lift the Corsairs over Western Connecticut on the road, 1-0.
With the win, UMass Dartmouth secures a share of the Little East Conference regular season title with a 9-2 (13-6 overall) conference record. The Corsairs, who share the title with Plymouth State and Keene State, earn the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament next week and will host No. 7 seed Worcester State.
The regular season crown is the fourth such title in program history and the first LEC team honor for first-year head coach Linee Mello-Frost. UMD is seeking a return trip to the LEC title game for the second-straight year and third in four years.
Burns' goal came early in the second half, as the Corsairs were not able to convert on nine first half shots. Off a cross from freshman Ciara Anderson (Medway, Mass.), Burns was able to tip the score past Colonial goalkeeper Kristy Trotta (Danbury, Conn.). The goal marked Burns' seventh score on the season, while Anderson secured her seventh assist.
Senior Jill Levrault (Somerset, Mass.) fired a game-high eight shots in the contest, while Trotta kept the Corsair scoring to a minimum with her eight saves. The Corsairs produced most of the offense on the day, outshooting the Colonials 14-7 and earning eight penalty corners.
Goalkeeper Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) needed to make only one stop on the contest.
The Corsairs will start their pursuit for a fourth LEC Tournament Championship when the Lancers visit Cressy Field at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Also hosting quarterfinal matchups will be No. 1 seed Plymouth State, No. 3 seed Keene State and No. 4 seed Eastern Connecticut.
