Corsairs Complete Comeback Over Mustangs; Cory Earns 1st Win

Box Score

NEWTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's lacrosse team erased a four-goal deficit over the final 10 minutes of regulation by scoring seven of the final eight markers to post a dramatic 18-16 come-from-behind victory over Mount Ida College this afternoon at Alumni Field. Head Coach Keith Cory earned his first win at the helm of the Corsairs women's lacrosse program.

Junior Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) recorded a season-high 10 points, including a career-best nine goals, to power the UMass Dartmouth (1-3) attack. Sophomore Kathryn Gibb (Georgetown, Mass.) netted her first collegiate hat trick and added an assist for a career-high four points, while classmates Catrina Longo (Billerica, Mass.) and Kelly Kryzak (Salisbury, Mass.) each registered three points. Gibb won a team-high five draw controls, while senior Sarah Kalmes (Billerica, Mass.) picked up five ground balls.

Freshman Erin LeBlanc (Walpole, Mass.) made 10 saves to earn her first collegiate victory, while classmate Sydney Fredette (Hudson, Mass.) turned aside 11 attempts in a losing effort.

The Corsairs were accurate in the second half, converting 12 of their 16 shots on net to overcome an 8-6 halftime deficit.

Facing its largest deficit of the contest (14-10), UMass Dartmouth snapped a streak of four consecutive Mount Ida goals with Kane's sixth marker of the match. The Mustangs responded four and a half minutes later, but the visitors would not go away quietly as Gibb found the back of the net. The Corsairs wasted little time scoring two goals in less than two minutes to forge a 15-all tie. Kane sandwiched a pair of tallies around Longo's fourth of the season.

The hosts regained their advantage, but it was short-lived as Kane forced the final tie 88 seconds later. Gibb completed her hat trick and tallied the eventual game-winner with three minutes, 29 seconds left on the clock. Kryzak sealed the victory with an insurance marker.

The Mustangs were led offensively by Amanda Bowen (Randolph, Vt.) and Sam Basler (Plymouth, Mass.) who each recorded five goals in the contest. Basler also registered a season-high 11 draw controls, coming just three draw controls away from tying the single game record. Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) scored four goals and one assist for Mount Ida.

UMass Dartmouth will open its Little East Conference schedule at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, when the Corsairs travel to Western Connecticut State University.
