Anderson Lifts Corsairs Past Warriors, 3-2

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman Ciara Anderson (Medway, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with two minutes, 16 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Corsairs to a 3-2 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday in a Little East Conference match on Cressy Field.

UMass Dartmouth earned its second straight win to improve to 3-1 on the season, including a 1-0 mark inside the conference circuit. The Corsairs handed the Warriors their first setback of the season, dropping Eastern Connecticut to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the Little East.

UMass Dartmouth generated the decisive scoring opportunity off a penalty corner with two and a half minutes left on the clock. Sophomore Erin Kish (Littleton, Mass.) inserted the penalty corner to Anderson along the left wing of the apron. Anderson gathered the pass and blasted her first collegiate goal just past the outstretched leg of the Warrior goalkeeper.

The Corsairs jumped out to a 2-0 advantage just 23 minutes into the contest. Junior Hunter Carden (Branford, Conn.) scored her first marker of the season in the 11th minute, converting a penalty corner from junior Emily Anderson (Medway, Mass.) and Kish. Eleven minutes later, Carden lifted a pass from junior Katelin Morrissey (Taunton, Mass.) over the shoulder of the Eastern backstop to send the hosts into the halftime intermission with the lead.

The Warriors charged out of the halftime intermission, whittling their deficit to 2-1 just 97 seconds into the second stanza. Senior Mackenzie Brower (Granby, Conn.) received the insertion from the penalty corner at the top of the apron and slid a pass to senior Laura Chicorka (Enfield, Conn.) along the flank. Chicorka ripped a shot towards the net that was deflected into the back of the cage by sophomore Alex Kallgren (Dudley, Mass.).

Eastern Connecticut continued to ride their momentum, scoring the equalizer in the 49th minute. Junior Paige Schneider (East Lyme, Conn.) broke in behind the Corsair backline and sent a diagonal pass back through the striking circle, where Kallgren deposited her second goal of the contest into the vacant net.

Sophomore Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) collected her second win of the week, making seven stops. Classmate Maddie LaRusso (Enfield, Conn.) came on in relief to the start the second half and registered one save. Junior Samantha Scavo (Redding, Conn.) played the opening 35 minutes, stopping three of the five shots she faced.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 7 p.m. on Sept. 15, when the Corsairs host Clark University in a non-conference contest.
